Had a PM on June 9th now probably having a Av Node ablation soon I've dealt with AFIB for over 16 years with 5 ablations and too many cardeoversions to remember. Who has had an AV Node ablation and what can I expect in regards to recovery, exercise and overall thoughts with this procedure ?

Hi I had this done at 79years, now 82, for me it was a good descision , I was similar to you no medication or cardioversions would work for the AF, in the end I could hardly walk to the bathroom completely exhausted , I am sure it saved me, having it done , I am Playing lawn bowls , walking a lot and enjoying quality of life, i researched all about it before having it done and found that about 80% of people had a rapid improvement after having it done, as I did,I must still keep taking eliquis blood thinner, to stop any clots forming, and a betablocker to slow the heart down , as the af will still be there, in the upper chambers. what ever you deside all the best Norm

AV Node ablation

Yes, the upper chambers of the heart known as the atria, might still be quivering from the AF, but they won't send any more crazy electrical messages to the ventricles making them crazy too. As long as these messages do not reach the ventricles, the damage to the heart will be averted. The ventricles will now beat regularly and efficiently.
Soon I hope

AV node ablation

AV node ablation is performed as a last resort for Atrial Fibrillation because a continuous AF will eventually damage your heart. The AV node ablation will reduce the damaging effect of AF on your heart. However this mean that the pumping function of your heart will now depend 100% on your pacemaker. Modern Pacemakers closely mimic the action of the AV node, but not a 100%. That means that you will be able to perform most of your normal physical activities, but you might have a few limitations. As a consolation, just think that the pacemaker will help you live without worrying about dying prematurely from the damage on you heart from a continuous AF.
