pacemaker insetion

I am 79 and 2 days post pacemaker implant. I am very sore and tired. Taking pain meds so that may be adding to feeling tired but wondered if it's normal.

Pacemaker Implant

The soreness and tiredness is likely the result of the surgery and anesthetic. The pain med's will also continue to make you tired as long as you take them. You also can't discount the impact of the stress associated with the whole ordeal. However, I can promise you that you will soon feel so much better than you could have anticipated. It takes some time to work through the soreness and maybe even some adjustment to the pacemaker. However, you'll discover that having a PM is really no big deal and with it keeping your heart rate regular and in sync, you should have much more energy than before the implant.

Wishing you the best..............

New PM

I fully agree with GoodDog.  I have had mine for nearly 3 months and fell better every day.

12 weeks in.

I'm a little further along. I had my first implant a tad over 12 weeks back and things are just begining to settle back to, I guess what will be my new normal. Certainly for the first 4-5 weeks I was very, very sore and it was not until all the bruising had gone that I realised just how swolen the wound site had been or how much it limited my movement. If something hurts you guard it automatically and that makes other muscles hurt because your movements change. IMO the consultants under-play how sore and painful healing process is. The procedure itself is not so bad due to the medication and pain reflief but post-op, personall I was cursing my surgeon for more than a few days. The whole thing takes it's toll, stress plays a part, not sleeping properly makes you tired and if you are on any new medication that plays a roll. There are too many "It's a walk in park posts" from pacemaker recipients that it went well for, that is not the case for everone.

It's not.. It is painfull and sore in the begining and takes time to heal and get used to it being there, especially if you are on the skinny side and the skin pulls tight over the device.

BUT for the majority it does all settle down in time. Give it time and take it at your own pace. We all heal and deal with things in our own way. Give your body and mind time to heal.

Take care DD.

Last night and this morning I felt as if someone had beat the tar out of me.  My chest was so sore.  About 10:00 AM decided to head to the ER to make sure everything was OK.  Turns out the PM was doing just fine, but I wasn't...I have been doing way to much lifting and such I guess, My chest muscles have been stretched to much.  I know I have been doing some lifting, but I'm 71 yrs young and really didn't think I did that much...but I guess I did.  So, I am back on lazy chair duty for a week or more.  So, I guess it does take a bit more that a couple weeks to heal,,,in my case a couple months didn't do it.  I have been feeling better each day and I guess I just did a bit to much lifting...50 lb bag of dog food and such.  So, those that are just getting your pace maker installed, please listen to your Dr. and take it slow coming back.  As the ER Dr. said today, "It was sugery after all"

I have had my pacer since 2005. At first it ruled my life. It took some time to calm down and make the mental adjustment. I had trouble sleeping and I worried a lot about pulling wires. Now I just live my life as I wish.
