Hello, my 75 year old father is having pacemaker upgrade surgery tomorrow. I see that when he first had his pacemaker placed it was a 2 hour surgery, tomorrow it is scheduled for 3 hours. I am wondering if there is a greater risk to having upgrade surgery? I just lost my brother unexpectedly and have found that I have become very fearful. Thank you- SA

I was unable to attend the doctors visit where they discussed what would be happening tomorrow. When I looked at my dad's chart online it was just called a pacemaker upgrade. I believe he is getting a combo pacemaker/defibrillator. 3 hours just feels so long, today.
Thank You MissyElectra

My brother was with when he had his pacemaker placed a year ago so I am rolling everything in to one bundle of anxiety. I'm fearing the surgery but also the wait in the waiting room, remembering my brother sitting there.
I am sorry to hear about losing your father as a teen. That must have been very hard.
I will take your advice and bring some cards or something else to keep our minds upbeat.
Thank you for the information!

Upgrade

Not being sure exactly what kind of upgrade he is receiving, it is difficult to say if there is any greater risk. However, generally, a pacemaker replacement and even a new lead insertion is not risky surgery.
It is most likely that there is very little risk. I would guess that this surgery is out-patient. So if he goes in the morning, he should be home in the afternoon.
Not to worry..........
Sincerely,
David
