Hi,
Had a pacemaker fitted two weeks ago. My heart rate has always been slow at around 30 BPM as I exercise a lot. however, upon being very suddenly admitted to hospital after a routine ECG they found that my heart beat was fluctuating between 18 and 35 beats per minute when asleep. I have my pacemaker check in 3 weeks and have had a dual lead fitted but I am concerned as I can sometimes feel my heart beat really heavily but not fast. Also when I lean forward I have a weird feeling behind my left pectoral muscle. My pacemaker has been set at 40 BPM and I can feel the heavy beating when I am just sat down and it can be faster than 40 BPM. I phoned the hospital and told them but they said that its my heats natural rhythm above 40 BPM. But why does it feel so heavy like it is beating out of my chest? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You'll be fine

It could be that you are not accustomed to the higher heart rate with the pacer. You really can trust these devices. I went through the same thing when I first received mine. Of course, you are going to be hyper-vigilant with regard to how you feel and your heart rate. This is just because you are stressed and a little bit afraid with this big change in your life. Please be assured that you will go on to feel so much better than before the implant. Your life will be as normal as the guy next door. I've had my PM for 30 years and I have lived my life as normally as anyone else. It has not prevented me from doing anything. On the contrary, it has given me the freedom to know I don't have to worry about my heart rate!
Sincerely,
David

Had mine 3 weeks ago. Have had some of the same issues. I think it is a norm.

I'm 44, active and have had my device for two years. I love it as I can run again and enjoy working out without feeling like I'm an old man.
PM settings

After a few weeks or months, your doctor will adjust the settings for you. The PM's come out of the box preset. The doctor gives it some time for your heart to get used to pacing and the PM leads to set in. Just call and let them know so they can adjust it for you now. Very easy to do with the programming in the office.
