Experience re recovery

Hi Everyone! First post - pacemaker done 1/6/16 Age 79 have not got energy back yet. Had one visit with cardiologist - saw some surgical site swelling and some above collar bone which they say is of no concern. I am 4 weeks post surgery and they say 8 weeks total before i can raise my left arm above my head.
Mainly would like to know how others have progressed with getting their energy back. Thanks a lot. .....Topaz

Experience in recovery

by lady4law - 2016-02-05 05:02:52

I have my original PM implanted about 10 years ago and, I am so sorry to say this, have experienced pain ever since. I did develop Breast Cancer about 9 months later and have undergone a number of surgeries, including but not limited to, relocation of the PM 3 times. Presently, I am experiencing sever pain in ribs and shoulder, near collar bone. I do recall being instructed NOT to life my arm over my head or shoulder level for a number of weeks but then went to PT for a few sessions

Instructions Vary

The post surgical instructions vary from doctor to doctor. A general consensus seems to be to not raise your arm above shoulder level for 30 days. My instructions also said to restrict lifting weights to no more than 5lbs. for the first 2 weeks and then no more than 10 lbs. for weeks 3-4. Most people say to also let your body's pain response be your guide. Lots of factors affect recovery time and how quickly you regain your energy. There is generally a period of time that involves tweeking of pacemaker settings and adjustments to the types and doses of medications that are prescribed to deal with things like AFIB. The main thing is to communicate with your doctor. Others speak very highly of participating in cardiac rehabilitation programs that are staffed by very competent physical therapists. Keeping a positive attitude also helps. I am a 74 year old woman, and my energy levels vary alot depending on things like the amount of good sleep I get and the stress in my life. Best wishes for continued progress in healing and regaining your energy levels. We have alot of very active athletes in the PM club.
