It Takes Time

Follow your doctor's instructions, but if there is anything that you have questions or can't remember, go back and make him/her/them explain it again. Start with small movements and increase the range of motion. They want the PM pocket and the leads to start healing before you start lifting and moving too much. I started moving on day 2 and restricted myself to 10 lbs for a month and then 50 for 6 months, with the blessing of my PM. I also bought 2 of the SoftTouch seatbelt cushions you see advertised to the right of this web page. They work quite well and I was driving confidently in a week. No DMV restrictions where I live. As far as the showering comment above, I took plastic wrap and my wife used surgical tape to seal over the wound and it worked great.
This forum has a lot of great info and you can use the search feature to find almost anything.

Everyone is different

Everyone's reaction to the PM and the implantation is different. You'll see a lot of posts where the people say it was unexpected so you aren't alone in that aspect.
Some people have a very positive reaction, recover quickly, and get on with their lives. Others have initial problems, get those straightened out, then go on with their lives. Others report little or no change and try to get on with their lives. And fortunately, a very few, come out worse. For the most part people do have a positive experience.
Time of recovery and getting back to "normal" depends upon your previous condition, how well the implant doctor performed, and how well you react to the PM itself.
The forum, having members with PM's, can usually answer any questions you have. A lot have experienced the situation first hand, so it's a large pool of experience.
Hope I've answered your questions.
Hopefully things are going well for you. I wish you the best.
