Closing of wound site

Hi,
My mom just had a pacemaker put in yesterday. When they brought her back to the room I noticed that the incision site was not covered by any bandage. She said it was glued shut. Is this common practice? I forgot to ask the nurse as I was so stressed over everything going on it slipped my mind.

Thanks,
Lisa

Dressing

Thanks. She never had any dressing on the area so I am concerned about infection. I guess when we go to the hospital today I will have to ask.

Yes, mine was

They often use glue on incisions now. Mine was glued shut and some "steri strips" placed over that (small usually white strips of tape that run across the wound). These strips will come off on their own after a few days to a week.

My incision site was covered by a large dressing when I first returned to my room, but the doctor took it off later and the nurse pull a small dressing over it. I had a reaction to the tape they used so that one came off later....

glue

I had glue the last time, also, though they did put a bandage over it right after surgery. As long as it's sealed, which the glue does better than a bandage, there's no need to be concerned about infection. The cool thing about glue is you can get it wet, as in she can take a shower as soon as she feels up to it.

.............................'glue' is just fine..technically its called Cyanoacrylate and to my knowledge , was used by M.A.S.H chopper crews back in the Vietnam war...

Put crudely, they glued the guys together on the ground so that they could be flown 'intact' back to base for treatment.

I had a double glued hernia op a few years back and was cycling in France within five days....

I use cyanoacrylate every day in my work..Golden Rule...keep your fingers out of the way or you could find yourself closely attached to a bit of wardrobe !!!

Best wishes to your Mom from the UK..

New problem

by lisanj - 2015-03-08 10:03:42

Thanks everyone for your input. Unfortunately they have moved her to a rehab. She left the hospital lethargic and weak and they felt a few days of rehab would help her strength. However, she is on a med called Neurotin 3 times a day which I believe is making her dizzy, drowsy and uncoordinated which is not going to help her with rehab. A whole other issue but I am afraid they will end up doing damage to the pacemaker. Sorry about venting.

New problem?

The pacemaker is pretty sturdy in its titanium box. I wouldn't worry too much about that. The glue will keep out any infection and since she's in a rehab facility with lots of germs and bacteria that's a good thing!

Hopefully, the meds issue will be quickly resolved and she can fully recover at home!

What is she on

Does she have epilepsy or seizures?

]She is on this for issues with her hands and feet(pain and numbness). She was released from the rehab today. So glad to have her home.

In fact after the final "tweaks" of my pacemaker programming at the one year check up it is working so well that I forget I have it.
