exercise limitations

I had my ICD implanted six months ago and begun exercising. I have started using a stationary bike, martial arts and weight lifting. My doctor has stated that I do not have any restrictions except having physical contact to the device area. The nurses state that I can not do any bench pressing or military press. I would like to read what others have experienced.

In regards to weight lifting, I substitute dumbbells or kettle bells instead of a barbell for things like bench and any other exercise that requires a front rack position like a military press.

My exact instructions are stop if it hurts and don't do anything stupid. I do presses, pull ups, push ups, etc. My pm is low enough that the bar doesn't get close to it in front rack position so I don't modify that. I currently have some nice bruises on my collarbone, went for a PR on front squats the other day :)

Same issue

I have had a pacemaker since 93 (born 1991) and have been working out since my late teens, but after some post operative infections, my doctors have now told me not to do any kind of weight lifting with my pectorals, but everything besides that is okay. But i Have the same question as you, wether its okay doing breast training, and surfing this site i have found out that about 90% says that they dont have any restrictions of any kind, besides if it hurts stop doing it. But some people, the 10%, have had issues with wires twisting and therefore got broke, but I might think its not directly related to the weight lifting. But I would like some other doctors opinion and thoughts about this matter if anyone have that?

I was told not to do military presses but everything else would be ok. it was explained to me that if I press over head whatever amount of weight I'm using the same amount of pressure is coming down on my collarbone. My wires somehow are ran under my collarbone - which is how a pinch of the wire can occur. I do all exercises including dumbbell presses. Still not sure why the didn't stay away from the collarbone area especially because I was only 40 when I received the pm. oh maybe insurance/money. Just take it slow and be safe -make sure people are aware of your situation. Frank

The experience of having a couple of lengths of wire fed into your heart muscle and an electronic 'box' tucked under the skin is not an insignificant event, but you will survive.
