Rides?

Hi there, I know that there are some rides at amusement parks that say - no pacemakers - but are there any rides I can go on? Has anyone in this club gone on rides with their pacemaker?

That in a lot of cases the signs are there to CYA the amusement companies from liability.

That said, some of the newer roller coasters (Superman in California I think) use magnetically driven track which contain some pretty powerful magnets. I would avoid those unless your device is MRI safe.

The other angle is that these sorts of rides are stressful on bodies, and can cause cardiac episodes.

The best advice I can tell you is to discuss it with your doctor. My doc says if I am comfortable riding them then go for it. He has also told me that pretty much anything other than an MRI is safe for me.

Discuss with your doc, then make the best decision for you.

The newer coasters and the ones that have super fast starts/stops tend to have the magnetic brakes. I avoid those, anything else goes. The list of rides with cardiac warnings is a little longer than that, like pretty much everything bigger than a carousel, but it's a cya world.

If you pace with rate response, you may feel your rate go up on bumpy rides. The pm gets fooled, the bouncing makes it think you are exercising. It's annoying but harmless.

Do you have one of the new leadless ones? If that's the case, ask your dr because the rules are going to be different for you.

Hi,

The first question I asked my doc when I found out I needed a pacer was"is it ok to go on amusement park rides?". He told me I had no restrictions whatsoever. My only advice is to wait at least 6 months though. My company picnic was at an amusement park last summer and I went on everything, but it had not quite been 6 months since my implant and some of the jerky ones caused discomfort and I could feel the pacer jiggling around and it bothered me for a few days but is fine now. I plan on going to 6 Flags over Mid America this summer, hopefully with no problems.

Along with everyone above, doc stated I was free to go on what I was comfortable with. If there is an issue, the pace/defib is there to correct it. I would avoid the magnetic driven rides though.

I also check the strapping systems. There is a ride at cedar point in ohio which requires much of the weight be put on your shoulders. That ride did not look like something I could bear with the weight on my device up front, so I avoided it. Don't have problems with other harness systems which just hold you in though.

I went on a ride after the staff running it told me it was fine for me. I checked the information book after and found out it was on the no list for people with pacemakers. But it didn't affect me in anyway I actually really enjoyed the ride. I say just go and enjoy yourself.
