Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate the well informed and thoughtful reply. To answer your question, I use a maximum heart rate formula I found in a journal article online:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11153730 The formula is 208 - .7 x age. I came up with 168.8 for myself. I am weighing the risks of surgery versus the benefits of more satisfying exercise and better overall fitness.
