Atrial fibrillation and defibrillator

I have chronic atrial fibrillation, a mechanical mitral valve, and an EF of 19-24. I"m scheduled to get a pacemaker defibrillator in two weeks. I'm about to change my mind about the defibrillator. Will the defibrillator shock me every time I go into AF. Does the pace maker shock also?

Hi Jeanie!

If you get a dual-chamber pacemaker/defibrillator, it should be able to sense what is going on in the atria, and inpret atrial fibrillation correctly (no shock). I think ICDs shocking people when in Afib has mainly been a problem in patients, who got a single-lead ICD only, located in the right ventricle. At least, I know one ICD patient in whom that happend, and they said it was due to the ICD being single-lead, ventricular only.

IT WAS THE BEST MOVE I EVER MADE. HAVE IT DONE AND DONT WORRY ABOUT A THING. I'VE HAD 3 PACEMAKERS AND NONE HAVE SHOCKED ME YET !
THE BENEFITS ARE GREAT

You know you're wired when...

Your pacemaker receives radio frequencies.

Yesterday I moved to a new place in my mind and realized how bad I felt 'before' and the difference my pacemaker has made.
