sugery for infections of leads

.my dad has a pacemaker they want to check the leads for an infection they don't see any though/ hes 79 is this operation necessary and is it dangerous

If there is any chance the leads are infected, they need to come OUT immediately. It can be life threatening if left in. They normally do cultures and start with antibiotics to to see if that gets it. If it hasn't gotten past the pocket sometimes that is enough. How long has he had it and why do they think it's infected?
