Hi,
I am 45 female very athletic heart rate 32-48 multiple pvcs the whole workup aprox 4mo ago. Well I stopped exercising totally for 4mo to see if hr would go up, well its up there in mid 50s no more ectopy but I decided I just can not live without exercising. I gained weight and feel worse so decided to have it done. My question is I would like to start running/stepmill 2/d after incersion. I need to start something soon where I can sweat and get my heart rate up, I made a big mistake stopping for 4mo. At my age its hard to come back. I love cross fit, and cardio with weights. I guess I am so upset having this done, I dont like the fact it will stick out. I am a little vane I guess. I know I will go on meds after but boy this is something. Thanks for listening.

Glad you found us! You are not alone, there are quite a few of us with similar histories.

It doesn't have to stick out. Make sure your surgeon knows that appearance is important to you, that's common sense not vanity. Also make sure he/she knows that you lift weights. Sometimes they place it right under the collarbone, you want it a little lower than that so that when you clean the bar, the bar doesn't sit on your pm.

I was out walking the day I got home, on the elliptical and recumbent bike within a week. Anything higher impact than that left me sore so I started with light cardio then built up as I felt up to it. You'll want to give it at least 8 weeks before trying a full Crossfit wod. You can go back sooner, just modify anything like pull ups or overhead weights until the leads have had a chance to heal well.

Why will you go on meds? If the only thing wrong is a slow hr, the pm will fix that, no meds necessary. Avoid them if they can, they have side effects.

I'm 47, have complete heart block, have been paced since 1994. I hike or ski every vacation, kayak and zipline every chance I get, and go to Crossfit 5 mornings a week. The pm doesn't keep me from doing anything I want to do. It's scary now, but I think you'll find that once the surgery is past you and your energy is back, you'll forget it's there.

Don't Worry Too Much

Everybody is different and have different reasons why they are here so follow your doctors orders. With that said, don't worry. I'm 43, female, and got my PM on October 1st this year, just over 3 weeks ago. I also exercise a lot and my heart rate had dropped to 30 causing me to feel like I was going to pass out. The only time I felt good was when I exercised. I also have high BP so I was very limited on which medications they could give me. That is the reason I got the PM. I followed release orders completely and was walking 3-5 miles a day just 2 days after implant (it was not comfortable because my PM felt like it was bouncing around inside my chest and I was still exhausted from surgery but I made myself do it very slowly at first and then faster as I felt better). At my 3 week post implant check up Tuesday I was cleared to exercise minus weights or anything that required my arm to be raised above shoulder height. I went to Zumba class last night and I'm running hills tonight and a 5k on Saturday. My EP said to go ahead and exercise as hard as I felt I could, that I could not hurt the PM. My PM did stick out the first couple of weeks but it settled in and just the last few days I noticed that the only thing that sticks out now is the incision and I know that is only temporary because I can already see it going down, too. It's hard not to be scared about this, but a good positive attitude will carry you through it. Just reading past posts on here and seeing that people live normal lives made me more confident. As always TraceyE gave great information, you might not need any meds. Tracey is the real deal.

I didn't quite get why you were receiving a pacemaker to begin with. Make sure you get a copy of the interagation report after you have your 1st follow-up. This place a a great sourse of knowledgable people who can help out here.

Tracey hit it on the head, it's not vanity, it's common sense.

I don't see any difficulty with running I got my PM Jan 2013. Didn't work out for 4 Months. Now back in the gym feel very good however the weight lifting has been modified very light upper body but work the arms and legs. Running and swimming are excellent . Follow your Dr. suggestions and get back to running. Lee
