Pacemaker Battery Life

Hi Goodday,

My son 20 Mths recently had a pacemaker implanted on december 2012 8 Mths old.At that time a pacemaker interrogration was done at the hospital and his battery life showed 9 years.This year another pacemaker interrogration was done at the hosspital and is battery life is now showing 6.5 years left.

Has anyone ever experience this before?Appreciate if you can share your information.Thanks..

Your son will be more mobile now then when he had his pacemaker first implanted and therefore will probably be using it more.

My daughter had her first PM at a few months old. She is now 13 and on her third but she is very active. We got seven and a half years out of the first and just five and a half years out of the second. A lot of active children are heavy on battery use.

Thanks sue for your comment.So you're saying that the more active my son is,the more he uses energy and the less will be his battery life?

The time the give you is an average estimate based on what they are currently using. However the needs of the children change over time and they can alter some of the settings over time to get the most out of the pacemaker system. Also children's normal heart rates are higher than adults.

Every child is different and it also depends on the type of pacemaker system.

My daughter also has other congenital heart abnormalities.

As Sue said, the estimate is based on the settings at the time they ran the report. Every time they change the settings, the estimated life changes.

Wow! Bless him and his heart, so young. I hope all is going well. When I got my pacemaker 13 weeks ago they said the battery would last 10 years. After first interrogation it was down to 5. I asked why and they said everyone uses the battery at a different rate and mine supposedly has a lot of scar tissue around the ventricle lead so it takes more voltage every time. Personally I am hoping to get it placed differently so the sooner the better for me.
