Pacemaker Panic

I've only had my pacemaker "installed" for a little over three months. My instillation was a rush job due to a car wreck, emergency room panic, four heart stoppages, etc. The accident was on a Friday around 7:00pm and the first pacemaker was put in Sat.am on my left side. However, during the procedure a lung collapsed, my heart stopped again and they had to cut a new hole and put a tube into my chest to get the lung inflated. Fearing contamination the surgeon removed the pacemaker, closed me up and then put a new pacemaker in on my right side around 12 hours later. Fortunately I remember almost none of the events after I blacked out just bofore I t-boned the utility post.
As you can see, if you've made it this far in my story, I didn't have the advantage of pre-pacemaker counseling. In fact my son was the one that had to give approval for the procedure to take place. I guess I'm just starting to experience some of the anxieties associated with having a pacemaker. I would love feedback on two things: (1). Golf- Is it still possible to play golf after a pacemaker is in place ? Do any of you play and have you experienced any problems associated with your pacemaker ? (2). Pacemaker movement- When I'm in bed at night and I turn to my left side my pacemaker seems to flop over on its side and then I have to push it back into place. The first time this happened I was so panicked I couldn't get back to sleep. I called the cardiac unit and they told me not to worry that such movement was "normal". To be honest their response hasn't eliminated my concern, especially since it's still a nightly event. Any info. or advice would be appreciated.

Golf

Coach, I had a PM put in a month ago and waited until this week to golf. I played 18 with no problem. I haven't experienced the movement you talked about, but wanted to let you know the golf was ok. By the way, happy to say I started off with four pars.
Emergency Pacer Implant
by LilyaM - 2013-08-15 09:08:01
I, too, had an emergency pacer implant, so I did not have the pre-pacemaker counseling either. I was a 28-year old mother of an 18-month old with an undiagnosed heart condition. In "repairing" the heart condition, it caused a 100% heart block of my upper chambers. My original PM was on the left, but due to problems with the original manufacturer, mine is now located on the right side. I am about to have my fourth re-plant since 1993 and my 18-month old, is now a 22 year-old college grad, but it was not easy getting to this point.
I, too, panicked at every turn, flipped out over what now seems like little things, but seemed like the world was ending at the time. I did not feel like I could do any of the things I liked to do when I first got the PM put in. Suddenly, I had this mechanical "thing" keeping me alive and I did not like it, and how was I supposed to keep track of a very active 18-month old?
It took about 6 months for pacer to settle in and the "pocket" to settle into place around it, but everything will get back to your new normal, and you will begin to enjoy the things you did before.
When you take that first swing, enjoy it.
Get Swinging !

Hi Coach After 3 months you should be able to play golf without any problems. Try a half swing at first , see how it feels then get "into the full swing of things"
Enjoy !
Cheers

Like you, I did not have the advantage of pre- counselng...Went to the hospital with fluttering/racing heart... when I was given meds to slow the heart down, I flat-lined for about 9 seconds...taken into ICU... 2 days later I had a PM... I had 3 different dr.s tell me I needed it,( ekg showed a-fib jumpin all over the monitor screen...) and I didn't have time to do anything but freak out over this. I also had some complications, but I won't go into that...
I have not played golf since the implant. It has been a few years actually since I've played. I now play disc golf, which I enjoy tremendously. As for the PM moving around... takes a little getting used to until tghe little guy decides to settle in.
It takes time for the physical as well as the emotional healing process. The anxieties and fears you are experiencing are perfectly normal. Just give yourself time to heal before that BIG swing...I would not jump right up and start swinging that driver just yet...
you'll be out playing a round before you know it. Only you can judge when you're ready...
take care

I do not golf sorry. The pacer movement is normal. Mine is 8 months old. It does not move. It is firmly in place.
Good luck Brian
