ask

Best thing is to ask his dr. How old is your son and where is his pm? If it's in the abdomen there will be more restrictions than if it's in his chest. For an adult (or adult sized kid) with it in the chest, any stroke should be ok.

I had my pacer implanted when I was six years old and went through with the swimming lessons and kept right up with all the other kids. There were no strokes that I was restricted from.

Sam is 10 his Pm is in his chest as he is a big lad for his age I read somewhere that the butterfly stroke can cause lead problems his Doctor said said he is good to go on the swimming front just didn't clarify which strokes were okay and I forgot to ask as I was just so pleased all was well x

leads

Sometimes on kids as they grow the leads get tighter so you have to think about the possibility of it pulling. If its in his chest and it's new, then there should be plenty of slack and he can do whatever stroke he wants. The leads are too long, rather than shorten them they coil the extra and put it behind the device so there is plenty of slack.

swim away

I am on my third pacemaker, just got #3 three days ago. I'll be back in the pool in 2 weeks, start slow and move up to my 1/2 - 1 mile three times a week. I also kayak a lot. I avoid the butterfly, but do everything else. Swimming is excellent exercise, and tends not to irritate my heart rhythm problems because the arms are level with the heart, or is it that I am a slow but steady swimmer? I am also a "long time adult" at 51, was born with a hole in my heart, but I have always been able to swim.

Back in the Pool

Six months after my PM surgery, I was back in the pool. Started out with the breast stroke and now back to freestyle. Just had an interrogation 2 days ago and all is well. It takes time for tissue to stabilize the leads. Most strokes should be okay however I heard that maybe you should stay away from the butterfly. Better consult your doctor.
