no pain meds

Surgery went well on Thursday. however after i started pain meds that evening it went down hill. Even with anit nausea meds I started feeling sick to my stomach. By Friday morning I started throwing up and could not keep any food down. Took last pain meds at 10:30 am on Friday and decided after that to just stop taking them. Otherwise I was not going to get to go home. Other than dealing with the pain after the meds wore off I felt fine. Got home late last night and just taking tylenol for soreness.

Sounds like an allergic reaction! So sorry you had to deal with that. Make a note of what it was so you don't get it again, not that there's ever a good time but post op is a really yucky time to find a new allergy. I've discovered a new drug with each surgery I've had. When I got my first pm I was there overnight for the pm, 2 more days for the allergic reaction to darvocet. Codeine after my 2nd pm, morphine after my 3rd pm. I'm at the point now I tell them to keep the drugs away from me! Tylenol is amazingly good stuff post-op, it's never done much for me for headaches but works great after surgery. You can alternate it with ibuprofen if it's not enough by itself, one or the other every 3 hours. Just don't do it on an empty stomach.

"allergic" to Percocet. Dr says it stimulates the brain vomiting center & it sure did. Quit that & took Tylenol & Codeine & got a rash. So just took Tylenol alone & worked well as mentioned above.

I can take Vicodin but that is a little heavy duty for my POM replacement discomfort so Tylenol it is.

Thank you for the feedback. I knew going in I would have trouble with pain meds always have, except usually the anti- nausea meds help. Not this time. Angry Sparrow, not sure what they were concerned about except that I felt so bad. Felt fine other than pain once I stopped taking the pain meds. Anyway, I am feeling pretty good now other than a little soreness and some pain especially when I lean forward to try and pick something up. It hurts in the inside of my arm on that side and pacemaker placement area. Did anyone else experience this? I assume it will go away after a while.
