left arm pain

I had a pacemaker installed in Sept of 2012. I have no complaints about the pacemaker itself, but have experienced left arm pain (sometimes severe) ever since the surgery. I thought perhaps having the arm "immobilized" for almost 6 weeks after implantation caused the problem. Now, I don't think so. Can't really sleep on my left side because of the aching pain. I feel that something is definitely wrong with the arm. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Hi. After implantations, I've been instructed to keep my arm moving and bring used for 6 weeks but not to lift above shoulder or lift with it. The motion was to prevent frozen shoulder which my EP said might be more painful than moving my arm after surgery. Because I didn't want more pain, I followed his instruction carefully and kept it moving as much as I could stand. It surely tired easily, though. Ask you EP if there's a chance you have frozen shoulder.

I have a ache in my upper arm during some moves, especially reaching side or backward, moved my arm like I was supposed to. It is not a bone ache but a nerve or muscle ache. Had pacemaker put in 1st part of oct.

immobilization is harmful after PM surgery

I do think what you have is because of immobilization. 6 weeks is way too long. I had my arm in the sling this time for 3-4 days, part-time and I'm having more trouble with the shoulder and tricep freezing, getting hard and stiff and painful than I've had the other two surgeries. And, yes, I also have pain even in the armpit area, like the other commenter above.
The other times, I did not really use the sling, that was a lot better. I am not going to use it anymore, I'm only 6 days out, and I need to move the arm in the permitted ranges, in order to keep it getting worse. I am starting to get nerve pain in the arm, so so painful. I read a study from Baylor and they do not recommend the sling and even did exercises with the patients in the non-permitted range of motion and nobody dislodged a lead.
Of course it's a small study and I'm not advocating for people disregarding their EPs advise and instructions, but I am going to move my arm in ways I'm allowed and it's already helping a little. I think it's a big mistake to keep it still, especially for weeks.

If you had your arm completely immobilized for the full 6 weeks, you may have frozen shoulder. Physical therapy can help. Or it's possible there was nerve damage during the surgery, also therapy may help.
We aren't really supposed to keep the arm still for 6 weeks, just no lifting or raising it above shoulder level. Any other movement is not only ok but encouraged.
