Replacements

Dear Grateful Heart,

I sure hope my rash doesn't last that long. As far as the hip replacements go, I had a wonderful doctor who explained everything and of course you have to go to a joint class beforehand. They let you hold the appliance, at least our teacher did. Not necessary but interesting.

The surgery wasn't long and the whole thing was just not that bad at all. Very little pain and after the first week or so you can take Tylenol for any pain. They usually get you up and walking the same day with a walker. Exercises can be done at home by you. I did them religiously every single day. Went from the walker to the cane in about 2-3 weeks more or less. And the doctor said use the cane like a third leg, it also helps to keep people away from you in crowds.

Since the first surgery is 2004, I had the other one replaced in 2006 and then a knee in Aug 2012. I am amazed at the small amount of pain in all of them. Knee was an absolute breeze and I had been told by friends it was going to be horrific. It wasn't and neither were the hips. Range of motion is very good.
There are some things you can't do, running was one of them. Well I wasn't a runner. But I've heard of people doing it. Just make sure you follow the important instructions of your doctor. Do not sit on anything low where it's hard to get up. This is only for about 6 wks. Don't lift anything really heavy and take it easy. Do your exercises daily. Don't overdo them. I thought well if 30 is good, a hundred would be better - NOT! Best of luck with your surgery.

Thank you so much for your detailed response. I really do appreciate it. It's great to hear it all went so well for you, that helps alot.

Rash: I know, it's the strangest thing. It only started after a lead revision, not the original device implantation. I gave up complaining about it to Doctors. Apparently, there is no infection so that is comforting. Hopefully your rash will clear up soon.
