Exercise and breathing

I work out every other day enough to feel tired, needing rest after. My BP & pulse are excellent yet lately when I walk up a series of stars three floors I have difficulty filling my lungs completely. This is what I experienced when my pulse was at 40 bpm before the implant last January 2012. I am getting stronger physically but that has not helped the deep breathing when walking up stairs. Perhaps daily work outs would be better, one hard next day easy. Any tips will be most appreciated. Thanks Lee 71 yrs old

exercise

I'm no expert but if you need a rest after exercise, it sounds like maybe you are working too hard. You should feel invigorated, not exhausted.

Are you on any meds? I'm on a beta blocker for atrial tachy and take it in the morning, right before I work out. I do fine working out, but by late afternoon just one flight of stairs has me out of breath. The meds keep it under control but they wear off. I figure at some point I'm going to have to add an evening dose, but for now it's more annoying than debilitating so I deal.

Have you been evaluated by a pulmonologist? Can't hurt to check it out, but if you work out and feel ok I wouldn't worry much about the stairs. You can be in great shape but still get out of breath on stairs!

Check Your Heart Rate

Lee,
You don’t say what your BPM’s are after you walk up the stairs. I am 67 and work out vigorously 5-6 days a week, play tennis and do lots of other activities. Sometimes when I go up a flight of stairs or other brief activities my PM takes off and all of a sudden my heart rate will go up over 100. As a result I feel like I’m doing something that requires a heart rate of over 100 and may be a little short of breath. In a minute or two I’m back to normal. My normal is 50-60. My low range is set at 50. So check your heart rate.

By the way I think after a good work out you should feel a little tired but also exhilarated.

Work outs

Thank you for your comment. I'll take your advice and seek a specialist. My workouts can be over the top for my age but not full tilt. Actually I am quite lucky to feel as well as I do. If one has spent a life time being active it really pays off when we reach the 60's 70's and 80's. I see men much younger then myself who are very weak and out of shape they often suffer from poor diet and total lack of exercise. That combination go hand in hand. So we just keep exercising our bodies, eat as well as we can and things always will work out for the best. Thanks Lee

Heart rate.

Excellent such an obvious marker. I have a Life Source BP device at home. However I will check it next time this happens. I recover, as well, quickly with a few minutes rest.
Thanks Jerry
