sedation or not ??

Hi everyone well im 4 days to surgery and ive given this some hard thinking weather to have sedation or not iv had a loop recorder inplanted and removed with just local injection was ok. when i had my ablation i had a very mild sedation was aware of everything just relaxed but that was just over a 3hour ordeal.The sedation bit is really bothering me dont like been not in control has anyone else had a pm with just local if so how was it???

l had an ablation with very little sedation & although it went on for over 4hrs l wasn't in any pain a lot of different sensations taking place but it was okay.
My PM was put in with just a local & there are many on here who have had theirs done that way & each has a different tale to tell.
My particular tale is not a good one as the chap who did mine was a "virgin" & messed up quite a bit, if things had gone as they should have then yeah, l think a local is good as l was on my way home a couple of hours after the procedure.
Hopefully others will come forward with their opinions & help you to decide but it is one of those "swings & roundabouts" things & at the end of the day it is down to you.

....there are some very tough cookies on this Forum...indeed ' one or two shun any pain releif or sedation..favouring a John Wayne.."its only a scratch"-kind of approach.

Me..a Total Wimp, had a Box Replant a month ago and was assured by my Surgeon that they had a great big jam jar full of Morphine with my name on it.

Next week I am having my PM ..leads and all heaved out and a new ,single-wire PM stuck in my right shoulder.

I am a real squirmer when on the slab,..indeed my Surgeon asked me why I was waggling my feet about ?.."because I dont want to be here, Doc"

Next week for my double-whammy I have asked for a General Anaesthetic....I reckon that with me spark-out, my Doc will have a better chance of doing a good job without an anxious, wriggling patient to deal with.

Now this is just me..as you can see 'smashing sue uk' sees it a different way !

I'm sure that it will be just fine.

I had mine done on local it went very well.My Dr said they only use local when they do a pacemaker but not sure if this is true with all Dr's but it was very easy Good luck

After reading Tatmans comments l think l may have given the wrong impression, l truly wish l had had more than a local because l was in agony but as l said l think it was because it was this chaps first time.As l am an optimist l thought because it was his first time he would be doing his best to impress but l will def'' have a general when l need to have it replaced, sorry but l am being honest!

I prefer to be as under as they will put me. My 2nd surgery, they had to reseat the leads, started out with me not being far enough under. I woke up when they cut me. All I could do was cry and tell them I felt that. The nurse jumped, and my husband was cleaning blood out of my hair after the surgery. I'm tricky to sedate as well, but they only put me far enough under that they could bring me back out of it quick if they needed to talk to me. Or at least that's how they explained it. Hopefully all goes well, and whichever way you choose, it's as painless as they can make it!

for you input im gunna wait and see on the day what im like iv just got all my paper work through for the big day says im in over night and an hour before i go down to the lab will be given IV penicilin?? take it thats for infection risk?? also says nothing about fasting so rang hospital and was told no need to fast done under local so i guess sedation may not be on offer any how. i will keep you posted how it goes and thanks everyone once again.

All the doc needs to do is yell "Oh Shit" and the patient is out. Wow. How fast was the recovery?

I'm not one of those tough cookies...it just isn't any problem for me. I like being in control like some of the others have mentioned. If they didn't have my face draped I would ask for a mirror so I could watch.
