sedation

hi iv been told am on januarys surgery list for my pm i can say im now panic stricken i will need sedation or i wont get through it. ive read some comments for some sedation was no fun. wot options will i have if any on the type of sedation i will have im in the uk.

Dont worry

I am the worlds worst worrier. I wanted to have a proper anaesthetic but they said 'no, sedation is fine'. I went into theatre really really frigtened but they gave me a choice of soothing music to listen to, put me at ease by telling me I could ask them to stop if I felt uncomfortable, and to be honest once they gave me the sedation I was awake but all my cares just drifted away. In fact it was very interesting and I now have no fears for when I need a replacement. It all went like a dream, was over in no time. That was 2 months ago now and the scar is now nice and neat and I am actually quite proud of it.

First of all, we can build this up in our minds to be SO much more than it is!! I know I did. Most of us find it's easier than expected. Focus on how much better you will feel, not the surgery itself. Talk to your dr. I was offered a mild sedative while I waited for surgery. (I asked if they could give it to my husband instead, he was way worse than me and driving me crazy :oP). They should be able to give you something for the night before and once you're on the iv at the hospital they can usually start the happy juice if you need it. In the US we meet with the anesthesiologist in advance to discuss any issues.

I had versed for my last one. I was supposedly awake but I don't remember anything.

I'm in the US but I was very upset when I found out I had to get my PM. I had the EP study in the morning and the PM that afternoon. They let me decide what type of sedation I wanted. We had decided I would be put fully under...tube down the throat and everything. I changed my mind and just asked for the step down from that....forget what they call it...but it was more than just the happy juice but not the full anesthesia. It worked out well for me. When I go in for a battery change I think I won't be as scared and will just go with the happy juice. That's safer anyway.

Hi Kimbo, glad to hear your getting your PM, it will make a big difference. I had mine fitted in the UK and whilst it wasn't my favourite day out, it certainly wasn't half as bad an experience as I had expected, in fact the actual surgery was a bit of an anti-climax compared to what I thought would happen. I had a local aneasthetic and can honestly say it wasn't a lot different to having a tooth extraction,just took a little longer. After the op pain was minimal, more like just uncomfortable, once I got used to my little electronic mate I hardly notice it's there. 10 months after the event and I hardly ever think about it, and when I do its just to be glad its there keeping an eye on things.
Hope all goes well for you, I am sure you will be fine,a lot of the things we worry about are not half as bad as we expected.

for your comments and advice they have been reasurring can say i will be glad when its all over not got my exact date but was told its jan i have my follow up appt with cardio for 7th feb which i find strange but when questioned it with his sec was told thats fine keep the appt i will be done before then, strange way of working but ha ho. i will keep you all informed on how it goes and im gunna opt for mild sedation dont want a panic attack on the table lol.

I am three days post-op with a MRI-compatible pm placed into my pectoris muscle - its a bigger pm and im a skinny person, so doc wanted to bury it a bit. They used a combo sedation of fentinol and something else - whatever it was, it worked - i was a nervous wreck, but pretty much slept thru the whole thing and was surprised when told it was done. Thery tucked my arms into the sheets on the gurney to avoid any involuntary flailings - lol. Feeling so much better now at a steady 60bps - no more shortness of breath or light-headedness, more energy - happy camper!
