kayaking

Does anyone know if it's ok to go kayaking? I have heard that moving the shoulders too much can damage the leads. Also, any input on weight lifting? I have read conflicting comments on this too, some people say it's ok, other say not to do it, others say it's ok but avoid shoulder press......

..........................you have not told us when you had your implant. I reckon that if its been 8 weeks or more you should be fine.

Try going to the top left of the page and checking out on 'Search'...type in Rowing Kayaking Golf Weighlifting...ie, all those sports that use strong shoulder movements.

Less than 8 weeks and I would stick to Pool and Cards !!

Keep us all informed...Best wishes

I did shoulder presses yesterday on 65#. My pm is low enough that when I clean the bar it’s nowhere near my pm or leads. If it was, I’d probably be a little more cautious. Probably lol, you’ll find I’m one of the less cautious members here. I got my first pm in 1994, so far nothing I’ve done has gotten me into trouble.

There are some conservative drs who say no heavy weights above shoulder level, no pull ups or anything hanging, no cleaning the bar. A few even say no weight above the shoulder. If your pm is very close to the clavicle, be careful with anything that can pinch the leads.

There are not enough of us out here that they really know what’s safe and what isn’t so just use common sense and go with what you are comfortable with and what feels good. I think a lot of times when drs give excessive restrictions it’s either fear of malpractice or just ignorance because most of their patients are sedentary, not based on solid facts. My dr’s opinion is the leads are so grown in with scar tissue that nothing I do is going to hurt them. He’s young and athletic so he is supportive of my efforts to stay in shape. He told me to forget it’s there, go live my life. And so I have!

I’ve heard of one person (through here) who had problems with leads breaking from lifting. After reading that, I considered cutting back for about 5 minutes :o) My choice is to continue to live my life rather than sit on the sidelines and worry about every little thing that could go wrong. I’m more worried about cancer from the foods we eat or the idiot drivers on the road than the chance of messing up a lead. I really don’t think I’m taking much of a chance by lifting. I enjoy it, it makes me feel good, it keeps my heart strong. For me, the benefits more than outweigh the risk. There is no one right answer, no one set of guidelines all drs agree on, so do what you are comfortable with.

sure

I don't do white water, but I kayak as often as I can, love it.

Drs are split on weight lifting, there's no evidence either way because there aren't enough of us out here who are active and paced. If you do a search, this is a popular question. I do Crossfit which is a lot of weights as well as running and other stuff 5 days a week. I go as hard as I can and have never had a problem. Sorry I don't have time to write more now, will add more later if no one else has jumped in. Or click on my name and see my past comments, you can probably find 2 or 3 discussions in the last few weeks.
