I am 7 days postop with PM still pain in neck arm shoulder and chest. I also have a lot of swelling. It is holiday weekend and MD not on call. Pain a little better than day 1-3 which was awful. Male neighbor said he had little pain. Is it normal to have so much pain and swelling?

I know of no correlation between body mass & pain level or length of time.
I was pretty skinny when I got my first PM in 2003. No pain pills after second day beyond Tylenol. Started back to near normal activities on third day.
Statistically speaking, you should not be experiencing THAT level of pain this long post-op.
WHEN did you see the nurse that told you about being skinny, etc?
How swollen?
Is it all red & feel warm to the touch?
Have any fever?
Look infected?
Yes, I'm trying to rule out possible infection. What do you think? It's about time that a local infection could be raising its ugly head. Consider that & if your answer is "Yes," You'd best hotfoot it to the nearest ER. You do NOT want an infection in the pocket. W/ that metal object in there, it's a primary site for very messy infections.

Hi Sheldon and Michael,
Two yrs ago I had a PM implant with very little pain and recovered quite fast. One yr ago, I had to have it removed and replaced with a PM/ICD and I was in terrible pain still a week after implant and had terrible swelling. I went to the emergency room thinking it must be infected. It wasnt, and about 2 wks post implant I was feeling much better and swelling was going down.
Just goes to show that every implant is different. If you think it could be infected, dont wait, get it checked out.
Take care, Cathy

I just got my pacemaker on Friday august 31 2012- I've read that some people didn't have a lot of pain - well I did- so I was relieved to read your post. It is day 3 and i am in pain still. I am swollen and feels like I got shot in the shoulder- I'm hoping it gets better - the nurse said because I'm thin that that's why it is so painful . I'm hoping each day it gets better cause this is not what I thought it would be-
