In Pain

I got my ICD implanted on August 14, 2012. It was implanted on my left side. I have had it 10 days now and today on my RIGHT side i am having chest pains. Is this common? Has anyone else had these pains?

Some pain is normal and will subside as time passes. If you're getting level 5-6 pain (out of 10) it is not normal. If that's the case, get as vocal as you have to get and don't stop shouting.

Muscle twitches are a nuscance but usually not a danger. However, my diapragm is beating with my heart any time I'm not lying down. That's because the V lead has pierced my heart and is pacing my diaphragm (not good). So, as you see, it depends. Sometimes the diaphragm twitches because the lead is touching the nerve up in the shoulder area and causing it to fire. That's not a big deal. Minor muscle twitches can sometimes be resolved by turning the voltage down a little bit. Ask your doc about that.

Hi dksussmann,

I had my ICD implant July 10th and had very similar problems, pains and strange twinges left side, right side, pains briefly in my heart, heart aching and sore feeling. The ICD clinic advised me to got to ER at one point but they found nothing. Probably it was all to do with the operation and the healing afterwards. The feelings were not imagined so I felt a bit neurotic. However, over six weeks they have mainly disappeared although after my first chech-up I now have a muscle twitch by the side of the box.

The box does not really bother me now although I am conscious it is there especially if I cross my left arm over to the right and I sometimes feel that it is about to slip under my armpit.

I hope yours settles down OK.

and it turned out to be tamponade....which is blood in the sac around your heart.

go to the ER and demand an ultrasound or echo (whatever they call it)...that will show if you have any fluid around your heart as that can be very very serious.

don't ever hesitate to go to the ER when you are having pain in or around your heart - especially after having surgery.

if it turns out NOT to be the pacemaker - oh well, at least you erred on the side of caution.
