Sleep Problem

Is it normal to experience sleep problems after PM implantation? Does this go away after a while? I am finding it impossible to stay asleep for a whole night. I don't even know why. I'm not in afib, tachy, or having palps. I just wake up.

Not necessarily normal...

...but happens.

Let me give you one place to look that is probably the simplest solution.

You did not say what your base & upper rates are set at.

IF the base rate is set very much above what your natural rate was before PM, it can cause you sleep problems. I had that post op when I got my first PM. They set me at 80 BPM as the base rate. I was a natural 72 pre PM. The result was that when I relaxed & my HR wanted to drop down to its old 72, it couldn't, so it left me w/ a feeling of hyper-alertness. Made me feel constantly "wired." Had them drop it back to 75 & that went away. Try it - might work for you IF your base rate is much above your natural rate.

After I had my PM put in it probably took me at least a couple of weeks before I could sleep through the night, try taking a benadry before you go to bed it helps my on nights that I still have problems and as of today I'm 3 weeks out from my surgery. Hope this helps!

My base rate is set at 60. They are battling brady tachy sydrome and afib. I don't know what my upper limit is, but I had bad chest pain yesterday and, after admitting me, they did a stress test up to 139 BPM. They found nothing wrong with the PM and no blockages or ischemia. I am a little perplexed by this whole ordeal although grateful I went assystole in the hospital instead of driving my car.
