EMP is an effect associated w/ certain type nuclear weapon's effects. Electro-Magnetic Pulse.
There is no way that the Sun could ever generate an EMP on Earth of the magnitude equal that of a nuke EMP.
Even that pulse will not cause things to explode - only fuse themselves into worthless piles of electronic rubbish. An EMP is like the EM field generated nearby a lightning bolt - induces very high electrical currents in conductors & wreaks havoc in fuses, electron tubes, semiconductors, etc.
It's the same thing as electronics in the home being damaged by lightning when there is a strike nearby, but not a direct hit.
I have witnessed a lightning strike that was w/i several feet of a house. It induced strong enough currents in some wiring inside the house that caused an arc strong enough to start a small fire that was quickly extinguished.
This concern comes up frequently. Our PM's are adequately shielded against EM fields that are generated by the Sun.

EMP is an effect associated with certain types of hand gun weapons available in the USA.
Graphic illustration of the effect is portrayed in Tarantinos 'Pulp Fiction'
