I am 49 years old and had a pacemaker fitted on the 25th May 2012. It was fitted as I had heart block grade 2 but was complete heart block while they were fitting the pm. I had been in hospital for 3 weeks before the pm was fitted as they thought I might have an auto-immune disease as I was very fit and not a typical candidate for heartblock. In the end there was no explanation for the heartblock just bad luck. The pm was fitted and I went home the next day feeling shaky on my legs after 3 weeks in bed and was quite aware of a loud heartbeat. They said when testing the pm that as I was quite slim and youngish it could be a problem hearing the heatbeat. I tried to increase my walking every day and took it quite easy but had a scare in the first week. I was watching tv in the evening and a strange feeling came over me clamy hands and a strange sensation in the head, the heartbeat was still loud. I ended up in A&E in a small hospital at 1am and he listened to my heart and said ok as no temp. After 1 week I was concerned that I wasn't feeling any better, evenings were worse so I tel the cardiac dept and asked how long was the recovery and should I be feeling so unwell. They told me to go to the doctors for an ecg which I did. This showed I had 95% heartblock so he tel my surgeon. He advised that it was stress and said take it easy, drink plenty. I had to go back 1 week later which I did said a little better but not right, funny feeling in stomach. They suggested a cardiac nurse ,10 days later still not heard anything. 3 days ago decided to buy a watch with a heart monitor. I felt much calmer as at a switch I could see that my heart was ok. I was then experiencing a strange sensation that started in my stomach but went to my head, ear and even nose. My heart was beating anywhere between 69 and 100 plus so calm. The next morning whilst making porridge the watch read 46 immediately i went to A&E. They tried to fob me off stress but said wanted pacemaker test to make sure it was working. The technician was wonderful said I had 168 episodes of the heart beating at 180 so no wonder I was feeling ill, the top half of my heart was fluttering and not beating properly, the valve then didn't know whether to open or not and the bottom part of the heart didn't know what to do,so beta blockers were given. I didn't see my surgeon but they said he would be notified. At the moment I have taken 3 tablets but my heart feels sore but I do have a little more energy. Has anyone experienced anything like this ,how long will it be before you start to feel well.

A pacemaker completely solved my problem. In fact, it was implanted just 7 weeks ago and I ran a race today, placed first in my age group.
