New Medtronic VIVA XT CRT-D was implanted late Jan. this year, replacing a Consulta PM. Even though my EP optimized the timing while watching the "Echo" screen last month, it was tough for me to begin my exercise. The first 15 minutes were slow --- as if the device were not increasing my heart rate quickly enough. I would do an hours exercise on the treadmill @ 3.3 mph or so. Climbing a flight of stairs would have me panting when I reached the top. A fast trot of 50 - 75 yards would also leave me breathless. Here's the scenario: I use a 40mg dose of furosemide once every 9 - 12 days per my cardiologist. Earlier this week, I took a 40mg dose on Sunday and another on Monday. My EP's nurse had stated, "Fluid buildup can sneak up on you, so beware." I am aware furosemide is a drug with a short period of effectiveness, unlike HCTZ. Suddenly, yesterday and today I put 5 miles on the treadmill with speeds at times of 4 mph. I was able to begin the exercise at 3.8mph without a SOB issue. Climbing three flights of stairs today was no problem -- no panting issues! My weight is down other 3 lbs. It appears the fluid buildup was the culprit all the while! I finally feel much better!

Regarding fluid buildup (edema) ------ I had no noticeable signs. -- I wear compression socks --- my ankles are not swollen. I took another 40mg dose of furosemide late yesterday. My height is 6' and today my morning weight was 192 - lowest in over 25 years, and I'm feeling just fine. It appears I haven't been taking the furosemide oftem enough. I'll be talking to my cardiologist tomorrow.
