My pacemaker is set for 60-80bpm. When I am walking on a treadmill even at 1.7-2.3 mph my hr suddenly is over 200. This happens every time I use the treadmill I do not feel ill, no sob, and not dizzy., Perhaps a bit fatigued but I would like to know what to do and what is wrong with me that causes a jump to over 200. I immediatly lower the speed to 1 mph or less and my hr"parachutes"down into the 80's or 70's. I am age 76 diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome, severe spinal stenosis with arthritis and have pm since 2012. I was sitting too long on sofa so rejoined the gym and do water aerobics and walk slowly on treadmill. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks..

Agree with Tracy as above. Also, 200 would be too fast to accurately count manually.

Hi TracyE and Suz,
I am using the monitor on the treadmill. I will try counting manually next time it happens. I did not know they are inaccurate. Thank you both very much..
Treadmill Heart Rate

Hi TraceyE,
Thank you for the detailed info..I called my cardio, he said what you said to do: Stop and count..he thought perhaps t'mill is giving double result so I asked the gym manager and he said no doubling but I do think heart rates on t'mills may be inaccurate, like you mentioned yesterday.
I really want to continue walking, where I live is very hot outdoors in summer so gym is a blessing. I might try the seated bike and pedal away if I can tolerate it. All the best..

The bike is great, too, but if you feel good walking on the treadmill there's no reason to stop. It's important that we stay as active as we can!

The last treadmill I was on alternated between telling me my rate was crazy high and I had no hr. Sometimes the pm will interfere and keep it from counting the beats, sometimes it will pick up pacing spikes as beats so a paced beat counts as 2. When in doubt, stop and count, however when I'm working out I don't stop unless I feel bad. If I feel good, I assume my rate is fine, whatever it happens to be. I know it's tempting and it takes a while to trust the pm, but don't spend half your workout taking your pulse.

Are you counting manually or going by the monitor on the treadmill? They are notoriously inaccurate with us so the first thing to do is count manually and confirm it is correct. If you are going that fast, it's not the pacer. The pm will keep you from going too low and help your rate get up on exertion if it doesn't go up on its own. If you race on your own,the pm will just watch.
