Leg and feet pain!

My pacemaker was inserted 9 weeks ago after an aortic valve replacement that did not go well. Went into 3rd degree heart block 3 days after valve replacement and had to have the pacemaker implanted and then had my right lung collapse shortly after. I have been having intense pain in my legs and feet. Start off the day ok but by afternoon the pain settles in. My feet and lower leg's ache so bad that I can barely walk. Had an ultrasound done of the circulation in my legs and was informed it was fine. Just started cardiac rehab so hopefully this will maybe improve pain??! My base rate is set at 80 and I'm wondering if this may be too fast? Any thoughts on this from anyone? Micki

Hi Micki!

I had the same problem and I really started worrying that it wasn't going to go away. It lasted for about 3 weeks. It wasn't as bad as what you're saying, but it did drive me crazy. It was also in my hands and face.

The docs wondered if they hit a nerve when doing the placement, if the device itself was sitting on a group of nerves, or if one or more of the leads were stimulating a nerve. There wasn't any way to test that, so I never knew for sure.

I almost think it was the Percocet they were giving me in the hospital and to take home and use at night so I could sleep. A few days after I quit taking it, those feelings went away. I Googled it and found that IS a side effect. Are you taking any new meds at all? If so, Google your side effects and the drug name and see if there's a match with your symptoms.

I'm 100% dependent and set at 90 bpm as a base rate, so it's probably not your rate, but since everyone is different, you never know.

Hopefully, one of us here will come up with the right answer for you.

Good luck!

I am experiencing foot pain right now. I went to my foot dr. He said it sounds like osteoarthritis.

Tenpin, this is an old thread, almost 5 years old.  No one will see your message.  Would you care to repost as a new message?  After 8 weeks you should be healing.  Leg pain is not usually caused by a pacemaker implant, perhaps chest, left arm pain or discomfort could be still be present, but not leg pain.  Do you have any skin discloration, or swelling in the leg that is painful?

Did you have any other procedures at the same time, like looking for coronary artery disease where they might have fed a catheter through your femoral artery to inspect your heart arteries to look for any blockages?  Access via femoral artery and or vein, can cause trauma, bruising, nerve pain in the legs.  If you have pain, swelling, skin discolouration you should see your doctor although I would see him/her anyway with those significant symptoms
