staph and removal

Well after spending six days in the hospital, removal of my pm drain placed then removed, I'm receiving antibotics thur iv for the staff infection. My heart rate is running from 30 to 80 and having pauses that last up to two mins. While this makes me feel weak and faint, hopefully the infecton will be gone in another month. I am continuing the ivs at home, two every day of vacomycin. Also had blood clots that set up in my pic line so I'm also on arixtra and coumadin. When the infection is gone I will be getting my 4th pm which will be implanted on the rt side. Hopefully out of the woods and the hard part, and on my way to recovery
Thanks everyone
KATHY

I would make it very clear you want good infection control when they put the next one in. If they don't have the antibiotic iv in place for the implant you might ask about it. My cardiologist makes it a standard procedure to give an antibiotic drip an hour before and an hour after the implant. He has almost no problems with infections.

best wishes,

Staff Infections

Hi Kathy, I had a somewhat similar procedure a few years ago with PM erosion & getting my 4th PM implant in my right chest. I was put on Cipro to avoid infection & was fortunate not to have any during these surgeries. The problem which is so prevalent is picking up the hospital bugs such as C-Diff as your normal bacteria in your digestive tract get destroyed by taking the antibiotics.

As I had this same series of events years prior with a major back surgery & got the C-Diff bug which took a year to clear up with conventional drugs. With this last episode I finally was put on oral Vancocyn to kill the bowel bug. Also very important is to take probiotics to replace the good bacteria to get a normal balance of good bacteria in the digestive tract. So, I probably qualify ownership of the Dan-Active company stock with their tasty supplement drink, & it does keep my inards happy. Just thought I'd pass this info on as I'm sure I'm not the only PM patient with these after surgery complaints.

Thanks for your comments, this has been a long process will be glad when it is over. Today I went to have the holter moniter placed. So hopefully all this wiil be over soon. And Frank I will request hour before and hour after iv antibiotcs just to be safe. Sounds very reasonable.

Again thanks, I love this site.
