Good Morning from TN.

I am a 50 yr old female that had a pacemaker placed 3 weeks ago due to syncope and low heart rate. I am still having pain at the site, and I feel like the pacemaker site is slightly swollen. I can feel the pacemaker just under the skin and it appears to be bulging out, is this normal?

My pacer area was swollen for acouple weeks then it buldged out a bit- nothing major- it depends on how skinny you are and muscles and type of pacer as well.

Glad you found us:)

If your pain is really bothering you and the swelling doesn't seem to be down as much as you thought it should be, simply go to your family doctor and ask he/she to take a look for peace of mind.

As long as it isn't red or hot as those are signs of infection.

As the swelling goes down you will be able to notice your pacemaker more. There are a few pictures that members have posted in the Members Gallery, mine included - I'm a relatively thin person, but if you go into the Gallery and want to see what mine looks like years after having it - just type in Pookie and only my pictures will appear.

It's quite normal for them to be noticeable if you are kind of thin and it all depends exactly where it was placed as well.

About your pain - you didn't say how bad it is, but if it continues, please go have it checked out my a doctor.

Take care,
Pookie

Syncope and Low Heart rate

Hi odumkl,
I too have a history of syncope and low heart rate. I had a Medtronic Reveal Monitor implanted and it recorded 3 times that my heart stopped cusing my syncopal episode. I was wondering about how long you had been suffering from syncope?
My implant was put in a little over a month and I still have a great deal of pain. But I am a WIMP and mine was under the muscle.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments and answers they are very helpful and much encouragement to know that someone else has been through the same thing, as you feel so alone, when there is no one close to you that has ever had a pacemaker etc. To answer one of the questions, I had sycope on and off for about 7 years, and was too stubborn to seek help, then I got afraid about driving etc, didn't want to hurt anyone if I blacked out while driving. I have a St. Judes pacer and it has been adjusted just one time, I feel stronger, if I could sleep alittle better, but you all know trying to turn to that side is not possible at this point I hope that gets better too with time. I guess of of this will take time. I am not a skinny woman I would say average. I will seek help if the pain doesn't go away. I am new here and I can not seem to find any pictures that you spoke about will keep looking. Thanks and GOD BLESS you all.

I am a nurse and went back to work after only 2 weeks, I do feel strong, but maybe I over did it with the push and pull of the daily life of a nurse.

Me Too

by aestoeklen - 2012-02-16 08:02:16

I got my PM 5 weeks ago and i too still hurt a bit but it certainly has improved. I didn't think it ever would but finally i think i have turned the corner. I too was surprised at how much it seems to show. Not sure what i was expecting...but i guess i didn't expect it to be a new feature on my chest, Oh well just glad i'm not fainting anymore!
I didn't get the memo to keep my shoulder moving. I was pretty nervous to move anything to be honest. now i guess i am paying for that since my shoulder now feels rather locked up, all this stiffness has brought back headaches that i was doing better with before :(
I am now just trying to get comfortable with my device and getting active again. I was extremely active to begin with but now i am just scared to do much.
I am thankful for this site, i find so many helpful things and appreciate all the helpful comments and suggestions.
