if it's red, swollen, oozing, burning, etc, those are all possible signs of infection.
Is it new, like less than a few weeks old? They do burn a bit sometimes when they're new. The body isn't always crazy about having a hunk of metal in there and it takes some time for it to settle in. If it's new and looks like it's popping out and burns, that can be perfectly normal but when in doubt, get it looked at! Better safe than sorry, an infection is nothing to mess around with. If you want to use scare tactics with him, tell him if they catch it early they can treat with oral antibiotics. If you catch it too late for that to work, you're looking at up to 6 weeks in the hospital on iv antibiotics, worst case removal of the pm until it's cleared up then new placement somewhere else after it's had a lot of time to heal up. It's so easy to get someone to look at it at the first sign of a problem. Good luck!

Call your dad's cardiologist now and explain the situation. There should be someone on-call. It's not possible for us to know what's going on.
