Post-op (they didn't test my defib)

Hi,

They've implanted my firts defibrillator yesterday. I feel a twinge in my left shoulder and where the defib was put which is totally normal after only 24 h.

What I was wondering is that they didn't test my defib yesterday right after they've implanted it. Aren't they always supposed to put you to sleep for a couple of minutes in order to shock you and test the 'machine'?

Thanks for your answers.

How do you...

...know that they really did not test it? If they used conscious sedation on you, they may have done it & you would not remember it. There are only bits & pieces of my three surgeries that I remember. The main one was a nurse lifting the sheet over my head during the first & asking w/a grin "Are you still there?"

Did someone specifically tell you that they didn't?

I'm w/ Patch on this - you should ask them if they did & explain why not if they didn't.

People under the influence of sedation do not make reliable witnesses in court!

... that they didn't test it but I don't remember why.

I'll ask them next week but I find that really weird.

...about people under sedation making lousy witnesses in court. You could not even remember some good hearsay!

Glad it all went well for you.

Didn't do mine...

They didn't test mine when I had it put in because for some reason I felt a great deal of pain while they were putting it in so they said they gave me enough meds to knock out 8 men. I have never had any issues with anestesia not working before or since then. I was unaware they didn't do it until my follow-up appt. He EP said they couldn't give me any more meds to put me in deep sleep to test it so I had to go back to have it done. Atleast this time I felt nothing.

Cup of coffee?

You must have had a cup of strong coffee before the anesthesia! LOL

Seriously, this is one of those tails they tell that just doesn't compute. With modern anesthesia there is no way you could remain awake if they really wanted to put you out, and of course that they are competent.

I keep thinking of a book called "Medical Tails" of all the stories I have heard docs tell.

"Well sir, why were you driving your car?"

"Your honor, I can't remember"
