I had a Pacemaker inserted on the 4-4-11.unfortunately the
Surgeon puctured my lung.Had a10inch tube inserted in my back.was in there for 4days.Excruciating pain,I also was in great pain while they were inserting the Pacemaker,as I was wide
Awake and felt everything that was going on,from start to finish.
Being a Lady nearly 89 years old come December.it was all a bit to much for me.But I am very happy to say I think the
Pacemaker is wonderful,as my breathing is back to normal.
Sorry that date on top line should be 4-8-11.
Would like to know if anyone else has had the same experience
as me.
Nanette,

Pain

You shouldn't have been in that kind of pain. I had mine implanted with only a local anesthesia and also stayed wide awake, but no pain at all. I didn't have my lung punctured though.
I suspect that you were given one of the amnesia type drugs, but are one of those where it didn't work. From what I here, they often don't use the local shot if they think you won't remember the pain.

punctured lung also

Hi Nannette and Gretchen
I had my implant on 18/8/11 and I also had my lung punctured. I was also very aware of all that went on while my pm was being implanted and it was very painful. They kept topping me up with local but didnt seem to help much. My punctured lung was picked up the next day so had a drain inserted then, most painful experience of my life. They had two goes under my arm then called in specialist who put it directley above pm. I stayed an extra two days in hospital. The positive of this is I am feeling good now, sleeping well as I am not worried about will I wake up in the morning with the heart block. If you are still waiting on PM don't be put off as there was only a 1% chance of punctured lung, we were just the unlucky one,
Cheers Jane32

Hi Nannette and Gretchen,
I did not get the added bonus of the collapsed lung but can truly relate to being awake and experiencing everything including the pain... very horrible, however as you also included, am very glad to have this pacemaker as by insurance policy against further cardiac arrest!!!
Take care Ladies :)

Hi there Nannette
How are you doing now. Hopefully you will be feeling a lot better, apart from not having a huge amount of energy I am feeling good. Let us know how you are.
Cheers Jane

My lung was punctured also but no one in the hospital caught it and they sent me home. I was back there in 2 hours with a large pneumothorax and spent an extra 2 wks in the hospital. Apparently the CRT-D saved my life because it zapped me 3 times altho I don't remember the 3rd one in the ambulance. Taking the chest tube out was the last thing they did before I got to come. Took me longer than I wanted or expected to get back to "normal". So glad you had a better experience and have done well since. You are the only other person I've been in contact with that also had a lung punctured. Not a good club to be in.
