I have had my pacemaker for about one year, 06/11. I have had a cardio version for A-Fib. I also had a thrombosis in my left arm that was surgically removed 06/11. I continued to have A-Fib off and on. About three weeks ago I started to experience A-Fib day and night. This is very uncomfortable even at night. I went to see my doctor on Wednesday and he wanted me to wear an event monitor for two weeks, then come back to see him. He knows that I have been experiencing A-Fib so why the event monitor. I am 62 years old and while I have A-Fib I can not do anything. Everything will trigger the A-Fib.I can't do anything right now due to this. I need some advice please. Thank you.

I hate afib

by Jax - 2012-07-13 11:07:37

I also have afib...very very annoying.

It's my understanding that a cardioversion may or may not work...just like an ablation. I'm not sure why your DR wants you to wear an event monitor..if the EKG is showing you in afib--- the only thing I could think of is there are other heart rhythms and maybe he wants to make sure that you are in afib so often and not some other benign heart rhythm. I take beta blockers to keep it under control and so far so good. I don't know whether you're on meds or not....but they can help...also anti-arrhythmic drugs may help...there's a question whether they help in constant a-fib so that's a DR question.

I would have a talk with my DR and ask him. Explain to him that;you re extremely uncomfortable and see what he says. If that's a problem...you need to change doctors. I had one time where my afib was racing my heart 200 beats. Not pleasant.

Thanks, I will talk to him. He knows that I was in A-Fib. He may not know what to do for me. I am on high blood pressure meds which are beta blockers and on amiodarone 200 mgs per day. I was on them last year three times per day. Well so far I have had to send in readings from the event monitor several times per day. They then in turn send to my doctor. I don't understand, but will be calling him on Monday morning. I should not have to go through this. I am uncomfortable and can not go out and can not even clean my house. The only thing that helps is just staying still and I am still in afib while sitting.

Try to relax

I don't understand DRs. They don't understand how uncomfortable it is!!! But getting yourself upset won't help you. Your house will still be there to clean.

I try Dr Weils deep breathing exercises to calm myself and my heart down. It seems to help me.

Let me know what happens.

I'm sure other people more knowledgeable than me will stop by for more input.

MONEY
I too have af and I have had all : multiple medication changes with all kinds of side affects, pacer, converstions, ablation and the one thing you must know one never knows when the alien will creep back in.
You may be the lucky one where one of the procedures keeps you in NSR for long periods but there is o cure.

I was thinking today if I only knew then what i do now I would have quesioned the MDs intensely before I settled for any of the above.Be vigilant!!!!

The only doctors who make more money then cardiologists are neurologists (brain surgeons and dentists).
And remember the better insurance the more tests they will do. The heart monitors are a great way of revenue especially if the doctor owns the cardiac labs with monitors and has his office do the monitoring.
Each event monitor is anywhere from $1500 to 3,000 per one time use.
good luck.

A-Fib

by Roys - 2012-07-14 07:07:11

Hi
You should try to find what will trigger your AF and change your diet. Also magnesium and potassium supplements can help, an inbalance of these minerals can trigger AF. Google a-fib.com by Steve Ryan, I got a lot of help from that web site , and am free of AF after 8 years of hell.
Cheers Roy

Afib book

by Jax - 2012-07-14 09:07:01

Yes, I read the afib book. Very informative.

I am working on vit and minerals. Something the DRs know nothing about and do not support. Or at least my DRs don't support. It does take some time to do this but Roy is right this book is worth reading.

Good question

It's about inflammation

by ldebaugh - 2012-07-15 01:07:37

Dear lendbracey,
Supplements really help, so research them and add some to your diet. Take anything out of your diet that causes inflammation, like sugar, red meat, etc.. Again, research this for yourself. Also there are anti-inflammatory foods and supplements-- an anti-inflammatory that helps me is Turmeric. Make sure you do onions, garlic, etc. read up on anti-inflammatory foods. Check out drweil.com for suggestions.

Have you tried meditation? I find it helpful. Take 15 to 20 min when you can be alone and sit calmly, breath a few deep breaths and just calm your mind as much as you can. I find it helpful to focus on a light or candle and have calm meditation music on. it helps!
I also am an a-fibber and a-flutterer.

Isn't pacemakerclub a great service for us all! Thank you to the organizers and those who keep the website up and going!

A-Fib

by Roys - 2012-07-15 01:07:51

No medication will cure AF it will only slow your heart rate down. I took Sotalol for 8 years, and my Dr said this was the best for AF, it would hold my heart to 80-120, but when i came out of A-Fib my H/R would be about 40 for the next 6 hours. And then the max was 85 walking up hill.

Well just want to report that I had to be admitted into the hospital for three days. They said that I had A-flutter and that it is a little worse than a-fib. Was short of breath and light-headed. They put me on digoxin and increased the amioradone to twice a day. I am feeling much better. Just hate the fact that I am on more meds than before but glad that I am still here.
