YOGA EXERCISES--ASANAS

Need some advice as to which Yoga exercises to do.  Just 5 weeks from surgery and have practiced Yoga for about 5 years off and on -- since getting this heart condition I was forced to drop Yoga.  Now need the stretching and back exercises to do at home.

Thanks,

Don

Hi! I did a bit of yoga years ago, way before i got my pm. It is a difficult one, because most yoga is to do with stretching. I dont think I could do any of the stretches that involve lying on your front and lifting the head, it pulls my wires even lying on my stomach on the beach and lifting my head to read a book.

I think that this will really be trial and error. If it pulls your front and it hurts, dont do it!

Hi Don,

you might want to look into classes (or DVDs) for restorative or gentle yoga. sounds a little wimpy, I know, but the goal is keep things moving until everything is healed. then you can get on to the hard core flow yoga =-) that is, I expect that after the muscles around the PM have healed, you'll be able to do most everything.

also check out kundalini yoga... this style has a strong focus on breathing and meditation as well as movement. much of it is gentle (or can be done in such a manner) though, as for any type of yoga, just dont do what doesnt work for you. it really may be worth going to a studio (if that's available) so you can receive personal instruction.

I will soon be figuring this question out in my own experience. I am a regular yoga practitioner (and sometimes teacher) and am just about to schedule my PM surgery.

All the best,

Margaret

You could ask your yoga/pacemaker here on this yoga forum. I do Pilates, but I know that there are some poses that should be avoided, just don't remember what they are.

But I think it will make me feel a lot better. My stamina to walk is already better, even right after surgery. They had me walk all around the floor before they would release me. I did so without being exhausted and winded the way I had been.
