Boot Camp

I signed up for a "boot camp" (my Junior Chamber of Commerce chapter was offering a special rate). Others have described it as similar to crossfit. I've never done crossfit before, so does anyone know if this is OK with a pm?

What the others said, run it by your doc first but I have been doing it for 2 1/2 years now and love it. The pm fixes my problem (CHB) and I am otherwise healthy so my dr said go for it. There are very few things I do not do, and most of the things I modify are due to the beta blocker I’m on making my bp too low, not the pm. Some drs give restrictions on weights overhead or things like pull ups that hang from the bar. My dr said that is not necessary, do whatever I want as long as I feel good. Actually, his exact words were "don’t do anything stupid." So far, so good.

Boot camp/crossfits are really intense fast workouts that work the entire body, mix weights with cardio, change daily and use very little equipment. Crossfit is a franchise but many gyms offer boot camp type classes that are similar. Some push harder than others. There will be pressure to push as hard as you can, to take it to the limit. That’s part of what makes these classes great, imo, you’ll do things you never thought you could do.  Just use common sense, there is a fine line between working as hard as you can and pushing yourself past what’s safe. Some days I keep up with everyone else, some days I stop and take breaks. I want them to push me, that’s why I’m there, but it’s up to me to know when to say no I’ve had enough.

One thing to be careful of, when you clean the barbell (bring it up to your shoulders, bar resting on chest), make sure the bar is not sitting on your pm or leads. Mine is lower so it’s not an issue for me but if it’s very close to your collarbone you might need to watch out.

If you have any questions, let me know. Have fun!

My eight year old son had a pacemaker since he was 6 months old. He does very well, plays soccer, baseball, and rides his bike. I am so glad he is not ashamed of his pacemaker. He will proudly show his "battery" to anyone.
