Running HRMs

Hello!

I want to get one of the fancy GPS / Heart Rate Monitor watches for my running training. I'm wondering if any of you out there are using one? Has there been any problems with it and your PM?

(I asked the technician at the PM clinic, but all they would say is that they didn't know if it would be a problem, and to use it at my own risk.)

Hi Elise, I just sent a private message about my HR monitor and re-read your question (normal for me). I'm retired from the electronic world after 50 years of service in it, but I wasn't aware of a GPS/HR!!! Great, sounds like a winner for running. Don't know if the RF output would bug a PM. Apparently PM engineering doesn't want to commit either. Personally, I've never given my GPS a thought as I have had mine close to my chest programming it while front seat passenger. Maybe you'll get a comment from others. donb

Heart Rate Monitor

by GinaB - 2010-11-21 03:11:05

Hi,
I just got a PM Nov. 3. What started me thinking I had a problem was my heart rate monitor would show that my heart rate would drop nearly in half when I would exert myself. After a few years and lots of tests, it was decided I need a PM. I went to the gym today with my monitor on looking forward to watching my heart rate go up, not down, with exercise. Didn't happen. I am seeing much the same results now as before PM. My theory is that the monitor is only picking up on the beats supplied by the pacemaker and because I am not completely PM dependent, it looks like my heart rate is lower than it actually is. Sometimes I really feel the beats so I know that those generated by the PM are stronger than my own. It could be that the monitor does not in itself interfere with the PM, but perhaps it makes the monitor unreliable. That's my theory anyway. I am going to ask for another treadmill test to really see what's going on because the idea that I got a PM only to have the same problem is devastating.

HRM

I started using a HRM on first exercise after PM and had no problems. (Polar) for over a year, then my HR would jump up to 250 on the monitor and stay until I stopped. Might have been AF as could not be detected manualy. I quit using the Polar and switched to a Sigma. At first the HR would be normal and show actual increase (ie up to my actual range) but would not come down when I slowed or stopped. I tried moving the chest strap down below the ribs and Wow! no more problem! I have ridden with this for over 12000 miles now and all is fine. I discussed this with my cardio Doc and he has no problems with using a HRM. If that would apply to all PM's I don't know.

I am starting on year 2 with my PM, when I run I use my Garmin watch - to show me my pace, time and distance but I don'r use the heart monitor and I'm fine, if fact I love the watch!
