Hi,
Has anyone had the symptoms my dad complains of? He appears to look very pasty and feels lightheaded when he enters shopping centres or magnetic doorways in supermarkets.
He has to sit down immediately after entering. I didn’t believe him but I have recently witnessed it for myself. He also complains of leg and hip pains at this time. Strange symptoms.
Dad has a Medtronic single chamber PM, wonder if anyone else has had this happen.

But I have not experienced it. I, on the other hand, have been known to set off the alarm system at a few stores however because of my Medtronics pacemaker.
There have been several posts in the last few years that seem to be quite similar to what your Dad experiences. You could try and find them by using the Search feature, upper right hand corner.
You didn't mention how long your Dad has had his pacemaker or why he had to have it. Do you know why he only received on lead (wire)? And do you know the model? I have a Medtronic Enpulse dual lead; I received it back in late 2004 when I was 42 for Sick Sinus Syndrome.
I hope these symptoms have been mentioned to his doctor or whoever takes care of him & his pacer.

......I too have had such reactions and also going back a long time.
I have always thought it was something to do with the Aircon in these places, allied to a kind of claustrophobia.
On a lighter side , I have sometimes wondered if they put some kind of 'Spend Money to Get Out Quick'gas in the Aircon...
You just cannot beat a good conspiracy theory !!

It is a relief he is not on his own and other people have this lightheaded feeling in Supermarkets.
Dad has Bradycardia and Afib have to check with him the model of his Medtronic he has had it for 2 years. These weird symptons came along just when PM was implanted. Is there anything a tech can do to help?Mentioned it to Cardiologist buy reply was to keep out of shopping centres, but hard to do .

Walk through FAST! Not a joke. The range of the sensors that cause this is quite short, so if Dad walks through fast, it will be but a quick, transitory effect w/ minor discomfort.

I set the alarm off at BJ's

I was standing there as they check your cart against your receipt with the alarm went off. When I realized what it was, I ran from the doorway area with the cart. The look on the girls face was priceless. She thought I was stealing something. I stopped of course after I cleared the doorway and explained to her I have an ICD and we both had a good laugh.
Don, of course, is right. The key is to walk fast past that area. I now know not to stand in that area for long...I keep moving.

OTOH, I can actually walk up to them & lean on them while carrying on a conversation!
Guess we ARE all different.

Hi! My device (on second one) instructions have always stated: DO NOT hesitate when entering or exiting doorways with theft security systems. Hopeful Heart

I feel so blessed to have this little gem implanted in me. When I think of the alternative it is quite overwhelming sometimes.
Supermarket Syndrome

Hi Leon .. Your dad definitely isn't imagining it; there have been several postings on here describing dizziness / feeling faint / almost passing out etc on entering certain supermarkets. If you Google " Supermarkets Pacemakers " or something similar you will find lots of stuff on it.
The security devices around the store entrances are apparently the cause.
Interestingly before I ever had a PM, I started to feel faint on entering some stores ( no; it wasn't dread of spending money that caused it ! } and this was the first symptom that I had of Sick Sinus Syndrome. My cardiologist didn't react as though I was crazy but had in fact come across it before. I guess the sinus node must react in some way
to whatever energy fields these security devices produce.
After having a PM, I am still aware of the strange feeling on entering some supermarkets but not nearly to the same extent as before.
Best wishes to your dad
