Flu Shot got me 5!

5/days in the Hospital. Fall vacation. Last Wednesday I got my flu shot. The doc said I was high risk...a good idea. Wednesday night I didn't feel too good. Thursday I toughed thru the day. I took Friday off, sat still, was congested. Barely drove to the drugstore...the doc recommended Sudafed. I took 2. Called the Cardiologist he said NO SUDAFED use Benadril. Friday night I couldn't breathe. Ambulance. In the ER they put the big air mask on me. After a couple they went to the small oxygen. At about 4AM I got my room.

Tests, tests, and more tests. The Cardiologist said I had fluid in me. Pee in the bottle. Water pills. Then a chemical stress test. Anybody get on of these? They shot the juice in and then in a short time I felt like I ran around the block. All while sitting there.

The Doc would not admit that the flu shot caused this. I was perfectly alright up until the shot. The Doc said it was fluid, congestive heart failure(a little heavy, don't you think?) I now hav 3 new meds...Dioxin, Water pill, and 325mg. aspirin.

No more flu shots for me. What do you guys think?

Gary...back on track!

Scary Stuff

I felt bad two weekends ago and although I felt better on Monday I went to the local clinic. The Nurse practicioner there said she could tell by looking at me that I did not have the flu but she put down something like AR Viral whatever that is. Anyway I went ahead and took the seasonal flu shot although I actually rerceived two shots of the pediatric dose as they were out of the adult shots. By early afternoon I
was sick with a slight fever, body aches, etc. Paperwork says that you can't get the flu from the shots but you could get similar symptoms such as I had. Was sick for a week. Who knows - very frustrating. Hope you are doing better.

The Flu

by jimmy412 - 2009-11-03 09:11:45

I had a flu shot and have been off work for a week with the flu. I finally go back tomorrow. I usually do not have a problem, but this year I think I was exposed to it before I got the shot, due to the early flu season.

I had problems years ago with the live virus that caused an infection, but now I would never get the intranasal flu vaccine due to that because it is a weakened live virus. I do believe in getting the shot, as I no longer get as sick as I use to with the flu.

Some people are allergic to the raw eggs that they grow the virus in. I would look into that maybe causing your problems Gary. I have heard of crazy stuff from that. Glad to hear you are doing better now.

Wife says the H1N1 is nasty

by COBradyBunch - 2009-11-03 10:11:04

My wife is an RT and says this H1N1 is nasty stuff. Patients are very hard to ventilate because the lungs get totally full of crap and it is difficult to get them to good sat numbers so I know even thought I am not high risk (50 and healthy except for the SSS/Brady crap) when I get my chance I am getting the shot (she already go hers and is fine).

I took both

by lenora - 2009-11-03 10:11:09

Haven't had any bad effects from the flu shot or the H1N1. I fall into the high risk category as a health care provider and because of cardiomyopathy. The flu is how I GOT cardiomyopathy 10 years ago.

flu shot

Some people do get symptoms following the flu shot. While it is not a live virus your body has to produce antibodies against the virus so you can fight it if you are exposed. This is why some people develop symptoms. Imagine if you had these symptoms, how much worse it would be if you actually got the flu? Are you on a ventilator? Are you walking? Are you talking? I am not sure you would saying the same thing if you were to get the flu tomorrow and wind up in the ICU having a machine breath for you.... or having someone you love die from it. If we only had that darn glass ball to see the future.... darn it!

flu shot response

I'm pretty tough Sam...I listened to my Doc who said I was high risk. He now has me up to 8 meds. Some I take, some I don't. For instance:

*Lisinopril-I check my blood pressure daily...its low yet he is keeping me on it. Even in the Hosp. they said "Hey, your pressure is LOW, you don't need more Lisinopril

*Lasix-I don't need to pee all the time so I use it only if I'm in the same place for hours.

*Simvastatin-I just received a chemical stress test...all clear, so I cut back on this

*the other day the nurse prac. said my level is too high from Coumadin...she wondered why. Could it be the addition of a 325mg. aspirin which I am not taking every day

*I am still taking Thyroid...but never noticed a lick of difference!

*I take 3 heart...2/Sotolol 1/Digoxin

I WILL TAKE THE RISK OF NO SHOTS...as it put me in for 5/days

*The Docs won't admit that the shot/and Sudafed put me in?

*I never really had the flu real bad and when I did TheraFlu worked fine.

*Feel free to add your comments.
