ICDs and patient longevity?

Can patients with PVC arrhythmia problems and ICDs have a normal life expectancy?

Or is this a condition that gets progressively worse to the point where no interventions work?

Troubled over my new problem.

I was told that the electrical system is corrected with PM's and such and life is as it has been and will always be. My EP told me that the only thing that would effect my life or shorten it is if I get hit by a truck. hahaha My understanding that arrhythmias are all electrical problems with the Sinius Nodes, it has no bearing on the heart itself. Your anxiety is running away with it as mine did when I got a PM in July 2012 for SSS. One day at a time my Friend.

my understanding that most people are 100 percent paced when their Sinus Nodes are not exsistant. I am 50 years old. And yes I would love to live 50 more years. hahahaha God willing !!

There are no long term studies because we are basically the first generation to be paced long term. I believe the longest paced is about 40 years and going strong. My dr said my problem is fixed and I can expect to live a normal long life.

Pvc's are generally considered harmless

Hi! Your ICD does not ground you. It is a backup for your dreams. On my second one. First implanted in 2004. We all think about our hearts at times, but I would rather die living than have worrying kill me. Wishing you many happy years. Hopeful Heart

First off PVC's are no problem and by themselves wouldn't be a reason for a pacemaker. They are just uncomfortable.

The usually reason for an ICD device is to deal with the potential of life threatening arrhythmia. Like any cardiac problem there is always the chance that it will worsen. It also may improve. And as you mentioned it could become more than the ICD can handle.

Of course even the totally healthy could have a cardiac condition that is deteriorating.

Just be sure and always wear your seatbelts and stay off the cell phone while driving. These 2 items are a much greater risk than dropping dead from the ICD situation.
