I have had my pacer since 2005. At first it ruled my life. It took some time to calm down and make the mental adjustment. I had trouble sleeping and I worried a lot about pulling wires. Now I just live my life as I wish.
How Long

My guess is 1 to 2 years. It all depends on how much it has to help to help your heart. Get a checkup every 3 months, or so, to get a better feel for how much time is left.
Your St. Jude pacemaker will not suddenly quit and leave you stranded. It will give a warning that replacement time is getting near starting at least 3 months before that time. Checkups are the best way to know that the time is getting closer.
