First 5k in Berlin summer heat

I participated in my first (official) 5k run yesterday evening, and finished in exactly 32:00 minutes! Given that the temperature was 30 degrees Celsius, I am really proud of this time. Heart rate was high, mostly max. CLS rate of 160, but also had episodes of 170-190bpm due to an atrial intrinsic rhythm kicking in and being tracked by the ventricular lead. It was okay - exhausting, but breathing was fine, and legs were fine, too.

The run took me up and down the "Ku'Damm", one of the main shopping streets in the heart of Berlin. There were 3000 participants in the 5k run, and 7000 in the 10k run, and along the track there were around 30.000 people watching. The atmosphere was quite overwhelming! And was what waiting for me after the finish line? A cooled, non-alcoholic Hefeweizen (beer brewed from wheat), that's how we do runs in Germany *lol*

Well done to you , and your RR sensors !!

With your medical history that is a great achievement and in that heat too . I bet you enjoyed the beer at the finish ; maybe if you do a 10k next you will get a real beer instead of that non-alcoholic stuff.

Years ago I had an entry for the Berlin marathon and couldn't do it because of a sprained ankle ; that is one of my many regrets in life but I did go to support my friends who were running it. Berlin is a fabulous city !!

As well as the 30,000 people watching , all of the PM club were there in spirit cheering you on. So well done again !

....that's almost 90 degrees Fahrenheit - on paving that had been absorbing heat all day. And, if the web is correct, at night. For non-runners in the US, that's 3 miles. For anyone working w/ RR challenges, that's darned good running. Coming off a PM replacement in late Jan 2014, that's superb running and perseverance.

Congrats, Inga. Well done. You have major bragging rights for this one.

And the latest pacer surgery wasn't even in January, but in the end of March, so just four months ago. The first time I had completed 5 kilometres was about six weeks ago, and I needed more time back then, wasn't running in the heat, and not on an asphalt street, but in the park. So, no surprise that I was really nervous yesterday before the run, even afraid that I would finish last or not at all. But then it all turned into an amazing night :-)

Ian, you need to come to Berlin again. There are so many different runs here, you don't have to do a full marathon. There are a couple of really nice 10k's (that's what I'd like to do maybe next year), and the half marathon route is beautiful, too.

Congratulations Inga! That is great especially after you had your PM replaced so recently. I wanted to ask you if the replacement went well and if you experienced much pain. It has been 6 weeks for me and although I feel my bra strap rub and sometimes feel it moving my arm, it is much better. Since I am new to this site, I wondered if you were a cardiologist as you seem to have good advice on PM settings for others. I had my settings changed 2 weeks ago as I still experienced dropped beats while biking up steep hills. When I went to the PM clinic for the 6 week voltage turn down, she said my ventricles were pacing 59% (versus 13% before setting change) and that I had lost a year of battery life. I wonder if I should return to the previous settings. Also I have noticed when wearing the HR monitor around the house my HR is 105 just walking from one room to another. Goes to 115 with one flight of stairs. Would this be due to the settings? The AV delays were decreased along with the PVARP and the RA/RV were changed from auto to fixed at 0.5/2.5 mv. The max tracking rate was raised from 170 to 175. Would these changes cause such an increase in pacing?
