to Ed, about sauna and heat

Ed, I read your message about the sauna. My cardiologist banned me from going to the heated 100 degree physical thearapy pool and my hot tub. Had to sell my hot tub, but I really miss doing PT in the water. I am more aquatic than terra-firma. Aloha Mary Ann

That's what you get for letting the cardiologist run your life. There is absolutely no reason that 100 deg warm water is going to cause any problems. The only reason I can think of would be if you have frequent spells of passing out.

I have had a hot tub for around 20 years and use it regularly. Even before I got the pacer I had some docs who were totally against hot tubs. I quickly found they had no idea why. It was just their policy. So learned to ignore them on this count.

Saunas seem to be O.K.

I have been using the Sauna regularly since I had the PM. fitted. I have had no ill effects or discomfort.
I have no underlying heart problems and only have 1...2nd degree. Heart block.
Everyone has to make allowances for their own health problems.
Can I suggest you rely on your personal doctor's advice?
He should be familiar with your condition(s).
Best wishes,
Johng

Please!

It drives me up the wall to hear the "Your doctor knows you best" thing. Are you saying that a cardiologist who sees a person for 10-15 minutes and has no evidence of their reaction to warm water is making an informed decision about the use of a hot tub? At best it is just his/her policy.

I'm not putting anyone down including the doctor. I'm only saying that if we make the decision to blindly follow the doctors orders or accept his/her diagnosis, then also accept the poor outcomes that happen.

cheers,

frank

Thanks for the info

I've just read your comment concerning the sauna. I've gotten very little information about the period following the first week of recovery. The "help" line I've been given is answered by some woman who barely lets me finish my question before telling me to gradually return to my normal life.
As my sauna is highly frequented, I am sure that there will be someone to help if I get into trouble. Nevertheless, thanks to your message, I will be very attentive to how I feel.

just was told by my heart doc. last week I could use my hottub again as long as I didn't overdo it and started in it for short periods of time till i was sure everything was fine. Only usually stay in 20 mins anyway. Thought i would need to sell it and the heat is so good for my arthitis. Best of luck to you
