What HR does a stethoscope pick up?

My son is 17 months old and has had a Medtronic EnPulse dual chamber, rate responsive pacer his whole life due to complete congenital heart block. So while the atrial part of his heart works pretty well, the ventrical part does not ... because the atrial cannot communicate at all with the ventrical. His ventrical rate (which the doctors refer to as his underlying heart rate) is average 43 bpm. So when his pacemaker is working well, his natural atrial rate might be 150 and his natural ventrica...

Pacemaker Questions

Hi,

I am wondering if it is normal to feel extremely tired after getting a pacemaker. On November 28th I passed out while driving my car. When I got to the hospital my heart rate was around 40. The doctors really couldn't find out why my heart rate was so low, so after a day in the hospital they sent me home. On December 12th, I passed out again--this time while laying in bed talking on the telephone. When the paramedics got to my house my heart rate was 32. I was taken to a different...

device on recall

just discovered (myself) that my guidant insignia is on recall (my serial number is specifically) I'd had device failure (complete loss of telemetry) which is specifically mentioned in the recall although this only appeared within this last 6 months and has progressed from intermittent to complete. I've had my pacer for 4 years, has anyone else had their device fail this late on after the recall? (mine was in the initial batch of recalled devices implanted before march 2004)

replacement surgery over

Hi Dear Friends,
I am now about 29 hours post surgery. I had my new angel placed in me yesterday morning. Thank you to everyone of you who sent me messages, prayed for me, and kept me in your thougths.

The surgery went well. I got to the hospital by 6 AM and was home by 11AM with a brand new angel....my new St. Jude pacer.

I am still tired from all the meds and I plan on taking a nap anytime that I feel like it! I guess after 13 years, I forgot about what the incis...

Some good news at last

My father Kenneth should had been having a CT scan next year 2008, but having read about chemotherapy tablets the family pushed early December 2007 for him to have a second CT scan. We received the results 2 weeks ago. The consultant is very pleased with the results and the tumor has decreased and he does not want to see my father until next March 2008.

As a family everyday we have been giving him, Mushroom Drops, Q10, Oxygen drops, Coral Calcium, Shark Tablet, Moducare, Seleno an...

burning pain from lead

I got my pacemaker on Oct. 16. I expected pain/discomfort from incision. But now, whenever I am active I get a burning pain above my pacemaker. I showed my doctor where the pain is and he says that is the location of the leads. Neither my cardiologist nor cardiac surgeon say that they have ever had this reported before, and can offer no help other than try something over the counter for pain. Can anybody tell me anything about this?

Happy New Years to all and to the Hopps family

This is an old posting and I thought I share it with the new people.

WE SOULD ALL THANK MR. JOHN HOPPS
John Hopps, a Canadian, invented the first heart pacemaker. At the age of 21, he joined the National Research Council in 1941 after training at the University of Manitoba as an electrical engineer. He found that by using mechanical means the heart could be artificially started again after it was exposed to a cooling process. With this discovery, Hopps was able to build the firs...
