Sorin

Does anyone else have a Sorin PM? I looked at people's profiles and they all seem to be either Medtronic or St Jude's. I've got a Sorin Reply DR, is there any real difference? Just a random question, not at all important, but just wondered.

Thanks,
Emma

Sorin PM

by Bill-2 - 2009-05-18 05:05:10

Emma, the Sorin Group is a French company and so far as I know does very little pacemaker business in the U.S. I have seen people on this site speak of having a Sorin PM, but since our members are from all over the world, I don't know where they were located.

As for the difference in pacemakers, my opinion is pacemakers are a lot like automobiles. Pacemakers are for the purpose of helping your heart maintain a steady rhythm. The purpose of any auto is to get you from one point to another. So with the pacemaker, regardless of brand, it helps your heart and with the auto, regardless of brand, it gets you from one place to another.

I do think since there is likely to be a slight difference in the various PMs the important thing is to get the one your doctor is most familiar with. Back to the vehicle comparison. I know I don't want to take my GMC to a Toyota dealer for a checkup, or my Medtronic PM to a Sorin facility for a checkup.

Hey!

I have a Sorin Group Reply DR. It's the world's smallest pacemaker and with the SafeR it features the best algorhythm to prevent unneccessary right-ventricular pacing (which according to several studies can lead to heart failure). There is a study showing that Sorin's SafeR (and Medtronic's MVP) works much better than a programmed AV-hysteresis. Patients who have this hysteresis are paced around 20%-30% in the ventricle, while those with SafeR or MVP are down to less than 5% in most cases (I have 1%-2%).

Sorin is Italian and bought Ela Medical which is French. It's a relatively small company compared to Medtronic, St. Jude etc., but lots of cardios have told me that their pacers are really really good. I chose the pacer myself after having compared lots of different models. It's the one that suits my needs best.

The Reply DR received FDA approval last year, in Europe it has been implanted since 2007. I'm from and living in Germany.

Greetings!
Inga

Sorin in the US

by Kathy.m.wenger@gmail.com - 2009-12-28 03:12:23

Hi Emma, I live in the midwest of the US and have a Sorin Pacer. Sad to say for me it has been a challenge. The Sorin Reps have to come from Oaklahoma and there in has been my problem, the local techs at my Cardio. office have had to look over the shoulder of the Rep each time the device has been checked and are learning the Sorin program on me, which I am NOT thrilled with. I have received emails from different people on this site who say they have a Sorin Pacemaker and are able to give lots of technical stats on the Sorin pacemakers, they to me sound more like Sorin Reps than patients, and have defended Sorin to me like crazy. My experience sad to say has been less than good with Sorin. I am now in the process of having to go to either the Cleveland Clinic or to another Dr. who does electrical mapping of the heart. I had my pacemaker implanted in June 09, asked for a St. Judes, woke up with a Sorin (I asked for a St. Judes because a very good friend of mine's Son is a St. Jude Rep. and because my Mom has a St. Jude pacer, and I had several talks with cardio Doc (my Mom's) about what was best device to use and why. At this point my heart has more problems than I had in June 09 (I never noticed irregular beats till the pacemaker was implanted) I hope your experience with Sorin is better than mine. I am now faced with Ablation treatment, which scares me like crazy. I have not been able to drive a car since Sept (things have steadly gotten worse) so I hope that with new treatment, things will get better. I will most likely get a new Cardio Doc. the only problem is no one local has even heard of Sorin (device was implanted 40 mins. away from my hometown) I have called all Cardio offices local with no success, I have called my Mothers Cardio doc, he works out of major Hospital in St. Louis MO Barnes Jewish (great hospital) never heard of Sorin or Ela. I am in a pickle with this thing, if it worked right no problem, but no one to check it locally and they admitted it was programed wrong from beginning.
Wow here I go again venting!!!!!!!!!!!
I know I will get a reply from a "Patient" aka Sorin Rep after this e-mail.
Let me know how things are going with you and your Sorin. I truly hope my case is not the norm
Take care Kat

So, my advice is to go about your daily routine and forget that you have a pacemaker implanted in your body.
