even though I get my inr tested (usually every other week) I don't know what the inition stand for. it does measure how quickly your blood will clot. The lower the number the quicker your blood will clot, the higher the number the longer it takes. I know that the drs. want mine to be between 2-3. what you eat/drink can change your readings (and forgettibg to take does it too-oops, I've done that before) Also, being on any antibiotics can change it. I had strep before and was on penecillian and my test went up to 4.1. It took me a bit to realize why.

From Wikipedia:

The prothrombin time (PT) and its derived measures of prothrombin ratio (PR) and international normalized ratio (INR) are measures of the extrinsic pathway of coagulation. They are used to determine the clotting tendency of blood, in the measure of warfarin dosage, liver damage, and vitamin K status. The reference range for prothrombin time is usually around 12–15 seconds; the normal range for the INR is 0.8–1.2.

INR may refer to: International Normal Ratio
Indian rupee, (currency code: ISO 4217)
International normalized ratio, a laboratory test measure of blood coagulation
Bureau of Intelligence and Research, of the US Department of State
Institute for Nuclear Research, of the Russian Academy of Sciences
Interventional neuroradiology, a minimally invasive medical specialty
Institute of National Remembrance
Inr may refer to:

initiator element, a DNA sequence that is part of many promoters transcribed by RNA polymerase II

INR

INR testing came out about 15 years ago...it stands for....
International normalized ratio(INR), a system established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee on Thrombosis and Hemostasis for reporting the results of blood coagulation (clotting) tests.

Prior to INR we use to use PTT or PT those are clotting factors....the WHO wanted to standardize the tests...hence out came INR which is dertermined by the INR and the PT(prothombin time). The higher the INR the more prone you are to bleeding...the lower the number you are more porne to clotting.....A high INR level such as INR=5 indicates that there is a high chance of bleeding, whereas if the INR=0.5 then there is a high chance of having a clot. Normal range for a healthy person is 0.9–1.3, and for people on warfarin therapy, 2.0–3.0, although the target INR may be higher in particular situations.

And as Shell said...medications and foods can potentiate the results of INR whether that be high or low...so that is another reason why it must be checked on a regular basis.

I hope this helps.....all the best....
