Thanks for the response to my inquiry.
I found out today that my PM will not be inserted untill next Friday, instead of tomorrow (doctor is sick).
One more question. My regular cardiologist told me I would probably stay in hospital overnight, however, the cardiologist doing the insertion says no, unless there is some complication. What is your experience with this?
Thanks, Doug

I stayed

by boatman50 - 2008-02-14 07:02:26

My pm was put in at 9pm, so I stayed overnight and was sent home the next day at about 2pm. 2 days later I was back in the hospital and had some coplications. Maybe it would have been better if I stayed a complete day. I was in for 3 days to get it all sorted out.

Overnight...

My first PM was a 7:30 PM surgery and I was out by 10:00 AM the next morning. My second PM and lead extraction was a 7:30 AM surgery and they still kept me overnight. I asked my surgeon why I could go home later that day as the hospital time would would have been similar to my fist overnight stay and he said it was because of the lead extraction. He wanted to watch me longer.

I got the feeling that if it was a straight switch, I might have been home that night.

Stayed overnight

I had my PM placed at 5PM and it required an overnight stay. During this stay I was on a monitor and also received a couple of doses of an IV antibiotic that my doctor does on all his PM insertions. In the AM I was visited by the Medtronic Tech who checked my PM to make sure everything was in working order and I was outta there by about noon. (had to wait for my EP to make rounds and sign the papers). Except for the lack of sleep (noisy roommate), I didn't mind staying the night and being monitored to make sure everything was OK. Good Luck, Carol

I had my PM implanted at 10AM and was released the next morning around 11AM after the Medtronic Rep and doctor had checked the PM. Good Luck, Andy

I had my pacemaker implanted 12/5/2007 at 11 am and I stayed over night. The day after the implant they rep for my pacemaker company came and checked my pacer to make sure it was ok. And to adjust the settings. I wish you the best of Luck with your Surgery........Britt<3

Had the 2nd PM & lead changed out & as above stayed overnight in PCU. Had Chest xray in AM to check lead, EKG & Guidant Tech work on regulating PM while I walked up & down hallway. EP visited & was out of there by mid-day so I could get some sleep in my own bed. Hah! Found out I was allergic to pain med (never took it before) so had barfed most of the night until they gave me something IV. Believe this is the rountine least for my EP except for unkonwn allergic reaction. Same for both PM/lead insertions #1 & #2.

Good luck, Janet

Geez, am I the only one that was released the same day? I had to be at the hospital at 6am for a 7am procedure. They kept me until about 8 pm.

So, my advice is to go about your daily routine and forget that you have a pacemaker implanted in your body.
